Alabama Spring Series Round 9: Corner MX Park Brown Rounds the Corner B Y S TEVE AND PE GGY C ORLEE Lincoln Cou nty Fairgro unds: Brad Modjewskl completely dominated the M errill Stadiumcross by winning all the races he entered , pocketing more than $700 for his efforts in Merrill, Wisconsin. Th e 125cc riders had to qualify out of heat races . Th e to p s ix transferred dire ctl y to th e Cash m ai n even t s , wh ile the others we nt to th e Trophy ma in . Jerem y Hac k barth a nd Brad Mod jew ski e ach wo n th e ir q ualifier , runn ing very clo se lap t im es . Allan Eckardt was all over Hackba rth' s rear fende r in the qu alifier, wh ile Modjews ki ra n away with h is heat. Mod jewski qu ick ly pu lled awa y in th e 10 -la p fe ature . Bern ie Plu m mer separated him self from th e pack a nd began t o pull in Modj e wsk i. B y ha lfwa y, th e lea de rs we re running into la ppe rs , and Modjewski found himself being slowed. Plumme r ga ined so me mu ch -needed ground but , af ter he completed lap eight, he ba iled off of a short trip le , hitting the ground ha rd . Na than Su llivan moved into s e co nd with a lap to go , wh ile Modjewski ran away with th e win . Hackbarth e nded up th ird on his Yamaha, and Dan Heind l was fourth . Dan We inkauf mov ed through the pa c k for fifth . Plummer , banged up , remounted and finished 11 th after a va lian t effo rt. The Suzuk i-mo u nted Modjewsk i po cketed the $200. Mor e than $6 00 was to be pa id o ut to th e top three finish er s in th e three -lap sprint. Modjews ki took another perfe ct ho les hot, leading the Heindl broth ers , Jo nas a n d th e pack. Modjewski never loo ked back . Jason Heindl was runner-up position , and Da n He in d l was thi rd . Travis Frassetto turned in some fast lap s to win the 60cc cla ss , a nd "Flyin '" Ryan Gilbert smoked th e 22 -ride r field of screa m ing 8 0 c c ra cers, with Cod y Sokolik turning in a good ride for second . In the 13 -24 Non -A class, Ya m ah a -m oun ted Je re mi S mi th le d t he pack of 22 riders to the first tu rn , with Adam Wehe in second. Dan Weink a uf st arted eighth but ended the first la p in sixth . Suzuki rider Matt Ka s per wa s o n the g as hard , m oving from 12th to fifth b y the en d of la p two . La p ped riders we re scattered through out th e c ourse , and We inkauf had to work ha rd t o k e e p h is s ig hts o n Sm ith. With a lap to go , he was righ t on him , but lapper s in th e whoo ps we re slowing him down. He made a last-d itc h effort to pass Sm ith but failed by a bi k e length . Garrett Houna c ki was th ird , and Kasper held onto fourth . Smith led the pack to th e first turn in th e second and decisive moto , with Jeff Gra umann close behind . Kasper he ld th ird . Weinkauf g ot a te rri b le st art back in 16t h. Exiting the grand stand triple section , a pack of riders got bun ched up in th e n e xt hairp in turn . The to p fou r esca ped the carnage. Smith he ld o n to first afte r th e first la p, wit h Kasp e r in tow . Grau mann ha d Weh e breathing down h is ne ck for third , bu t Graumann bailed off of h is bike .e ntering a short triple sec t io n, handin g thi rd to Wehe . Kasper c h ec ke d o u t with the win for second ove ra ll on a 4-1 score. Smith ended up se con d and the overall . Weinkauf was third for third overa II . eN n e _ s CORNER, AL, MAY20 uzuki-mo unted Lonnie Brown ha d a perfect da y at Corne r MX as he swept both the 250c A and Over 30 classes at round nine of the Alabama Sprin g Series in a most conv inci ng mann er . Br own 's onl y c h a lle n ge ca me afte r a fa ll sent him to the rear of the pa c k in mot o two of the 250cc A class a nd he came back to win the m oto , barel y in front of a charging Josh Th ompson . For th e past two d e c ades , the Superc ross influ e nc e has be en ev id ent in th e d esi gn o f near ly a ll m o t o cro ss t r ac ks in th e Unit ed Stat e s , local t ra c ks as well as th e Nat ion al ve n ue s . While pro v id ing c halleng ing o bstacles fo r the ride rs and a great s how for the s p e ct ators , many of these cou rses are intimidating for the youngs ters as well as for some of th e o lde r riders who have to get up o n Mo nda y and g o to wo rk . S ...--,-- -- - - - -- There is someth ing of a movement th roug hout the Southeast, at le ast - to return to the outdoor , na tur al -te rrai n type of track. Th is c ha nge is a result of the promoters surveying the riders and liste ning to their c once rns . Corner MX is a fine example of th is the ory at work. Located a few miles north of Birmingham, Alabam a , Corn er MX is an all -natu ral -t errain c ou rse that is fun a nd . s af e for a ll riders . With ro lling green hills, Corner has a d istin ct ive , almost Europe an flair. Th e tra c k has wonderful, loamy so il and is 95-perc e nt vis ib le fro m an yplace on t h e grounds . Corner has a n underground wate r ing sy s t e m and full sho wer/ restroom/con cession facilit ies. Pro moters Scott and Pai ge Aa ron go the extra m ile to e nsure each ra c e is a su ccess, and the ir efforts show. The 250cc A class provided p lenty of fireworks for the cr owd at Corner. He went on to eliminate the compet ition in both the Supermini and Youth classes.
