With in the first mile , Shaw pa ssed Nesbitt by stra ighten ing a co rne r and go ing di re ct ly off a c re e k ban k . Le iva n then headed for the scoring check, with S ha w, KTM rider Jerry Hem a nn , Ne s bitt, a rej u vena t ed Mik e Windm a n n , Ke n Youn t an d Bobby Dun c an all within 20 seconds at th e lap's end . On the next la p there was a bit of position juggling , but Le iva n still set t he tempo . He m a nn m ove d into t he run ne r-up spot an d s t a ye d right on Le ivan's heels . Just 3 0 seconds sepa rated th e first s ix racers after two circu its , while holes hot a rtist Nesbitt fell a b it off the p a c e , figh ting handling pro blems from th e outset. As the track beg an to dry out, lap ti mes d e cre a s e d , a nd Hem ann wa s ha ngi ng on to Leivan despite hav ing p robl ems getti ng through traff ic. "The first few ra ces of th e ye ar, I was getting bad sta rts a nd ha ving to fight from beh ind ," Leivan recounte d . "I got blind-sided in the worst co mer, an d it mov ed me back to sixth place ," Jaghab sa id. "Then a fa ther-a nd -so n tea m took m e out in a creek section.
