We we re s ide-by side, a nd I wasn 't go ing to ba c k off goi ng into the woods. We were jus t wide open . I thought , 'If he g ets me th roug h the woo ds, h e ' s go in g t o probably pull on m e .' He was rid ing rea lly good . I kind of got re all y nervous the last lap , wh ich bummed me out, be caus e I try not to get nervous , but that fou r-stro ke - all I could hear were four-stro kes all day to day. So, towards the end , wh en I heard him , I thought, 'O h no , th is is going to be tough .' " Hatch certain ly did giv e Abbott a run at the e nd . "I di dn 't ha ve that great of a jump off the line , but I just wanted to be smart and keep wo rking m y wa y through a nd not make an y s t u p id m istakes , wh ich I kn ew wou ld b e really easy to do today ," Hatch said. "It was just one of those days that I felt like I was on a ra il, I fe lt re a lly good and wa s in the zone . We we re ba ttlin g pre tt y good , and I still ha d a litt le left over. But with a lap a nd a half to go , there was a little rut , a nd I high -s ided in it . Lu c k ily , the b ike s tayed ru nni ng , so I on ly lost five seconds. Then , back in a dow n hill , the fro nt end wa s hed o ut a nd I stalled it. I kic ked for a while , ha d to get it out of gea r; I'm still le a rni ng how to start th e hot fo ur-s troke when it tips over. " Smith seemed to back it off a notch or two toward th e end of the ra ce . "It was kind o f boring, actually ," Smith said of his ride . "Fo r the first fou r or five laps , I was riding re ally hard , got into second , I caught Destry and then - on the fo urth lap ha d trou ble on the uphill , go t s tu c k (Ri g ht) Rodney Smith was a c ontender , b ut a couple of bobbles held h im back t o third. and cra shed . I just couldn't get back into a rh ythm . My head just wasn 't in it today , I don 't know . Th e last half I just couldn 't start dr iving , I just gave up." Fourth overall wen t t o KTM m ounted Brian Garrahan , who com pl e t ed th e fir st la p in 12 t h p la c e . G a rra ha n s a id he h a d a re la t ive ly u n eve nt ful r ace , as he ch a rg ed th rough th e pack , finishing a lit tl e under a minute ahead of fifth -pla c e Kiedrowski, who rode hard the wh o le race as we ll, a ft e r c ras h ing in the second tu m . "Afte r I went down ," Kie d rowsk i s a id, "I worked u p , w or ke d up , worked up , and got into fo urth. T he n , I was going down o ne of those tric ky downhill s , came d own to th e bo tto m and poor - th e bike stall ed. So I was si tting there for like a minute , kic k sta rt ing it. It wa s on e o f those b ad on es [sta lls] ; it just flamed out. I got ba ck go ing and ended up fifth. " Russ Pe a rs o n crossed th e fin ish line in s ixth place, desp ite starting off the race around 25th. He spent some of his time late in the race d icing with Pat Ga rra ha n , whom he beat to the finish line by 20 s e c o nds . (Rig ht ) The WORCS points leader going Into the event was Mike Kied row ski, but a secondtum ge t-off had him p la ying catch up all day. He ended up fifth and i s now one point behind Abbott. On e o f th ose riders who was also effe cted by the log ja m - but in a negative wa y - was Ty Da vis , who tagged anoth er rider's bi ke a nd was left wit h a bent front bra ke d isc . Da vis eventually lost th e us e of his fro nt brake a ltogether and wa s for c ed to pit and repla c e the entire w heel. Davis ended up 12 t h ov e rall. Taking the c he c k ere d fl a g in eighth , 56 s econds behind Pa t Ga rra han , wa s Ca s elli , wh ile ninth p la c e went to ea rly- lea der Mye rs .
