Two laps later, Smith and Scooter Vemon were engaged in a sid e - by -side duel fo r sec o nd. On th e sixth la p , Smith dove under Ver non in turn fo ur to take the run ner-u p position . Beyer fin ish ed fourth , w ith the rest heading for the semis . Stanley won th e d rag race t o th e fi r st tu rn of th e th ird h eat, h ead in g Steve Li berty . Behin d these two we re Poovey , Mark Gr ub er and Ste ve Murray . On th e second lap, Poo vey do ve under Li bert y in turn one and too k off after Stanley . A t th e ha lfway point , Gruber an d Murra y also found a wa y past Li berty , who los t tra ct io n on th e low lin e. With th ree laps to go, Mu rray got aro und Gruber fo r th ird . libert y wou ld have to rid e a semi to make the eve ni ng' s m ain event. The rid er s, who d id not m ak e the ma in by fi nishi ng in the to p four in the hea t ra c es, would have an other ch ance in th e semis. Only the top two fro m each sem i wou ld earn a spot on the th ird row of the main. Bo b Ybema led the fi rst semi after p assin g J ohn Hlebo Ill , who had held the lead going int o t u rn o ne. Yb e ma a n d Hle bo pull ed o ut a co mforta ble adv antage over the ba ttle for third place be tween Eric Misch ler an d Er ic Ch en ey . Mis ch ler won th e battle , but both riders were headed for the Last Chance Qualifier. Christian Vernon led the ent ire eight laps of the second semi. Behind him on the first lap were Jeremy D eRu yt er, Liberty, and Ben Carlson . Li berty t ook o ver the sesond position on lap two, leaving DeRuyter and Ca rl son to d ea l w ith a very deter m in ed Rick Br et l, who was charging from h is fifth-place start. Brett too k over third on the thi rd lap , but by this time Vernon and Liberty were gone, and B r et! was headed for the LCQ along with th e rest. M isch l e r took com m a n d of t h e LCQ by getting the ho leshot and leading all eight laps. Behind him , Carl son , B re t! , D e Ru y t er , and Jerad Ch ene y were battl ing for the last rem ain ing spot in the m ain event. DeRuyt er had seco nd, o n the second la p , but a very determined Car lson retook the lead on la p three and held off repeated cha l lenges fo r th e posi tion. Poove y sta rt ed on th e g roove and us ed th e traction he fou n d there t o power his wa y int o turn one ahea d of King an d Sm ith when th e m ain event got underw ay . A s the riders crossed th e fi n ish stripe t o end th e first la p , Poo ve y an d K ing had the lead ove r Stanl ey , Smith , Landes, McCoy , and Schnabel. As Poo vey and King m oved away fro m th e oth er s, K ing wa s watch ing Poo vey's li nes and loo k in g for a pl ace to pass . On th e eigh th la p . K ing went un der Poo vey in tu rn fou r an d took over th e lead. Ki ng and Poov ey pulled out a c omforta ble lead over the pack. In the battle for th ird , McCoy was the f ir st ri d er t o l o se co ntact wh en he wen t high in turn four and got into the marb l es. He st ayed o n two w h eel s and rejoined th e race in ninth pl ace, Stanley held third for six laps befo re being pa st by Smith. Beh ind th is pa ir, Land es and Schnabel were trad in g fifth and sixth with ev ery la p , At the ha lfw ay p oi n t , K i n g and Poovey were ou t front in fi rst and second, w ith Sm ith, Stanley , Sc hnabel, an d Landes in a tig ht bun ch behind them . McCoy had rebounded from his earli er m ist ak e and was now in seve nth pla c e . On la p 1 6, St an l ey pass ed Sm ith down the back stretc h, and wh en Sm it h went into turn three, La ndes a nd Sc h na be l we n t a ro und h im on th e outsi de . As Smi th was str ug gli ng f o r co ntrol th rough tu rn four, he went high and collided with Schna bel , w h o fell. Schnabel re mounted and took one more lap be for e retiring with an injured hand. Wi th five laps to go , Stan ley was holding off Landes and Smith for third as McCo y had again sli p pe d off the li ne and was passed by Scooter Ver non and Mu rray. As the rid er s took th e white flag to beg in th e last lap , L and es had pulled a whee l l e n g t h ahe ad of Stanley to begin the last lap . Sta nley held the inside line through turns one and two and had the drive to outrun Landes through turns three and four to capture third over Landes . The fin ish ing order behind the top four was Smith, Murray, Scooter Vernon, McCoy, Snyder, and Liberty . K ing 's win was his first in the Fo rmula USA Drag Specialties Dirt Track Series this season, and the victory, combined with his second-place fi n ish in Virginia , gives h im the points lead with a total of 76 . Poovey is second, with 66 , and Virginia winner S n y d e r , who finished ninth in this main event, is third , with 64. CN Dan Stanle y (10) and Brett Landes (41) battled ove r the th ird spot for the entire distance. Stanley's Suz uki got a better drive off tum four than Landes' CCM, se curing the final po dium spot for th e Washington ri d e r.
