By the e nd of the first-lap free -fora ll, Dowd had dropped to s ixth behind La Ro c c o , Fe rr y had moved around Hugh17s for th ird an d Carmichael began to pr~ssure the flying Windh am for the lead. With the battl e on between Windham and Carmicha el for the top position , Ferry looked solid in th ird , follow ed by Hughes , wh o was qu ickly drop ped, first by LaRoc co , to fifth, a nd then by Tortelli , to sixth. Reynard Modific a tio ns / Th ousa n d O a ks Yama ha ' s Robbie Rey na rd was next in seve nth, followed by Vuillemin, Dowd and Team Honda's Ezra Lusk. Windham contro lled the ins ide into the next tu rn and was a ble to hold his Kawa sa ki nemesis at ba y - for the mom ent. Before the comp letio n of the lap, howev er , Ca rm icha el tried aga in, this tim e m aking the p ass st ick a nd dropping Windham into the clut ch e s of Ferry, LaRocco a nd Torte lli - in tha t order. "I felt it com ing," said Windham . "I just wasn 't rid ing m y own ra c e . With the pressu re that Ricky wa s putt ing on me, I was n't able to ride m y own lines a nd it ca used me to pu m p up." "I saw those g u y s [LaRoc co a nd Tortelli] com ing up on us and I knew tha t I needed to get by him, so I co uld try to chec k out," sa id Carmich ae l. On c e o ut in front , Carm icha e l began to immediately put time on his com petito rs as LaRo cco a nd Tort elli took turns ca rving past Ferry. Carmichael took th e moto win, followed clos ely by LaRocco in second. Tort elli was a close th ird, followed by Ferry in fourth a nd Windh a m, who rode the las t few lap s of the moto a lone, in fifth. Vuillemin finished s ixth and Lusk finished seventh. Dowd was eigh th , followed by Re yn ard in n inth . Fa s t b y Ferra c ci Hus qvarna 's Tra vis Pre s to n filled out the top 10 . With clear track ahead , Wind ha m immediately began to distan ce himself from t he pa c k .
