" I' m still a tittle sore. but. once I get going, I feel all right. " said Lamson shortly after Saturday' s practi ce sess ion . " A t firs t. I thought I might have crac ked a vertebrae. but it ended up being a cracked rib way dow n in my lower back. I go t out kind of lucky , I guess . just missing that one race . " Uke Doug Henry. Lamson . who is a two-time National Champion. was exempt from qualifying due to the AM A·s 'Past Champio ns' rule. Speaking of qualifying , many were surprised to learn that fo ur time and defending 500 cc World Cha mpion J oel Sme ts, defend ing 250 cc W orld Cha mpion Frederic Bolley and three-time 125cc W orld Champion Alessio Ch iodi we re not exempt from qualifying and had to race not only the Sunday morning qualifiers. but the Saturday pre-qualifiers. as well. The AMA 's 'Past Champ ions' rule only applies to AMA National Champions . Yam aha of Troy ' s Erne sto Fonseca won the firs t 125cc qualifier and 3-D Racing/EZ W ider' s Keith J ohnson won the seco nd 125cc qualifier. The 125cc C onsolation win went to KTM·s David Pingree. The Splitfi re/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team fielded just two r ide rs at Southwic k. M ike Brow n and Bobby Bonds. Still absent we re Tallon V ohl and . S hae Bentley and C asey Lyt le . " Tallon is still rec uperating from the concussion he got at Glen Helen. said team bo ss M itch Payt on. "W e're not positive that he'll eve n ride next week. because this weekend he still wasn 't ready . W e're probably plann ing on him not ridi ng next weekend rat Budd s Creekl and maybe goi ng to Mammoth and riding dunng the week up there. W e'll see If he feels well enough to ride thai race and then he can co me to the next National after that. Shae is ac tually riding today, back in G eorgia. His mecha nic flew dow n there and they 're going to do a little riding at his house . They 're goin g to co me out to Californ ia this week and do some testing wi th us. Casey 's ankle has healed up and he·s starte d riding this week. as well. - Payt on expects that all three riders wi ll be able to retu rn for the Red Bud N ational in J uly . W Notably abse nt from this year' s race was Great Lake Av ianon' s Heath Voss. Vo ss injured his wri st at the Las Ve gas Supercross finale and has been a no-show at all of the Nationals run so far. Also absent from South wick we re Plano Honda's B illy P a y n e and Fast by Ferracci Husqvarna' s Bryan McGavran . Payne has been out of act ion for quite some time, healing up from a bro ken sho ulder blade. and M cGavran injured his wrist at Hangt own. c Speaking of injuries, severa l other riders hit the ground hard on Su nday , but all seemed to be all rig ht after th e ra ce . Te am Honda' s Ryan Hughes wa s knoc ked uncon sciou s in the first 250cc mot o afte r a high-speed swa p and subsequent crash. and Team Yamaha' s David Vuillemin crashed on the first lap of the seco nd 250cc moto and appeared to have suffered another col larbone injury. Also, Team S uzuki' s Rodrig Thain was on the groun d for some time in the seco nd 125cc moto. but his mechanic Tony Berlutt i said tha t he should be all right . On S aturday . 250cc privateer James P o v o l n y was carted off with a sho ulder injury. but he too was wa lking around on Sunday , Parked near the Kawa saki sem i for the last seve ral rou nds has been a fancy new motorhome graced with Fox and M obilevision banners. The motorhom e is a new hospita lity/l oung e area for Ricky Carmichael. his family, frie nds and local Fox dealers .
