Sweden's Tony Rickardsson made history by winning the first ever motorcycle event at the Mill ennium Stadium in Cardiff, England, on June 9. Rickardsson lifted the British Grand Prix after a night of thrilling racing in front of 40,000 fans on the purpose-built track which replaced the soccer and rugby field . "It was an awesome experience in front of thousands of people, and it means so much to me to win such a massive meeting," Rickardsson said. "The track was good, and I'm looking forward to rid ing in Stockholm when we have the Swedish GP at the Olympic Stadium. I can 't wait. " In doing so, he closed the gap on series leader Tomasz Gollob to just two points with four rounds of the series remainlnq, Both riders are looking more likely to make the title chase a two-man race. There was disappointment for reigning champion Mark Loram who managed just eight points after being involved in a horrifying high -speed crash. He is now lagging well behind both Gollob and Rickardsson. And the night also brought misery for Americans Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock; both went out after just two rides each , and it now seems certain that the series becomes a damage limitation exercise. Hamill crashed out of the meet as early as the ninth race after hopes were raised when he won his second ride, but he then high-Sided while chasing England's Scott Nicholls. Hancock never really look ed comfortable, after he entered the meet in the main event. A th ird behind Gollob and Jason Crump in his opening ride then put him against Leigh Adam s and Ryan Sulli van. Both relegated Hancock into third place and an early bath. John Hipkiss as an outpatient of a hospital near his home.
