The French du o of Roncada and T o rt e lli were next, followed by the thumpers of Ferry and Hughes. Fru strated by Smets' ability to p u ll h im d own the s t rai g h t s, Ca rmic hael bull-dog ge d his way under the stock y Belgian in a tight left-hand ed turn just after the beginning of the third lap , ta k ing ove r the top spot to the cheers of th e partisan fa ns .
