Abbott started his day by m ounting up the re a r tire that he 'd run o ut of tim e with the nig ht before . Us ing a pneuma tic tube this time , he had no pr o blem a nd he p ushed h is bike to the sta rt line on time . With less than one mi nute separating the top six rid e rs , the Team Gre en -backed Abbott needed a flawless ride to hold onto his lead. Yamaha rid er David Pearson, ju st 14 seconds back , was out for the overall win, but with th e leader in his sights , perhaps he was pushing just a bit too hard . He hit -a tree early on Sunday that left him with a broken litt le finger and knocked him off the pace . He wou ld finish 14th for the day and o ve ra ll. Another Pe arson , Nick (3 0 seconds behind the leader after day one ) als o had his sights set on th e win, and the Montclair Yamaha rider was ridin g s tro n g despite hi s tim e off. He wou ld finish fifth for th e day and overal l. The third Pearson that Abbott had to worry about was Russ. His day-tw o re sults we re an improvement over Saturday , when he lost most of a fo ot pe g early in th e day . J us t 2 7 seconds behind Ab bott , his third p lace would only be good for thi rd ov e ra ll. Meanwh ile , th e Garrahan s we re h itting the ir stride. Riding tog eth er with Steve S ilvestri , the y were not only ru nning near the fron t, bu t having fun doing it. Expla ined Pat, "We g o t in to a b ig roa d secti on , d ic ing back an d forth , three a breast , pa ssing e a c h other and pow e r sli d ing a ll the corners a nd just having a b ig old time - j ust h av in g fu n and d o in g g o od . T h is is wha t ridi ng is all about ; it' s one of th ose days yo u dr eam about. " Brian , who had finished fo urth on Satu rday , m a d e a run for the leader but came up 18 s econd s short. The KTM rider im p ro ve d with a secondplace finish on Sunday, which would move h im up to sec ond overall.
