K: District 14 Hare Scrambles Parlin , Wegner Battle at the Creek B y AARON B ARTIl BATILE CREEK, MI, MAY 6 Battle Creek MC hosted the third round of the Michigan Hare Scrambl es Series and the first round of the Mich igan Off-road Championship Series. Some 250 riders att end ed this event. This club ha s a reputation for hostin g ex cellent events, and this yea r wa s no exception. Byro n Kibby laid out a co urse jus t over five miles long. The majority of the trail co nsisted of s ing le- track a nd a ver y dusty m otocross s ectio n . Cr ew s worked hard watering th e spectator portion of the track . Afte r the halfway point, Parli n extend ed his le ad to one mi nute a nd mainta ined it to the finish. Grooves Motorsports rider Brya n Dunlap put in another consistent ride , finishing on the podiu m in third. Fourth on the day was Steven's Sport Center pilot Travis Tudethout . The fifth rider was Holida y Powe rs ports ' Syd Ga llt , putting in a no ther strong perform an ce. Heading into round three , two riders were deadlocked in the points in the 200cc class de fending cla ss cha m pion Aaron Barth, a nd Mike Sta pul a . Ou t of t he gate, Sta pula gr a bbed th e ear ly lead . He wa s followed by Ric k Bell e s , KDX-m o un te d Dav id Biel e c , Barth and Mark Beck er . "Ma n. Sta pula is such a qu ick starter, it mak es it hard to follow the guy," Belles commented. "He's gone before you know it." Moo s e / Notul /W ie s co / Smith -supported Stapula inc reased his lead by almost 15 seconds each lap. Barth eventually mad e it up to sec ond after strug gling to get throu gh the pack. By the halfway point, Stapula had increased his lead to one minute and 30 seconds, In the fina l hour, G-Sport/To rco/ Lansin g Cycle/FMF-backed Barth sta rted his charge , whittling away ea ch lap at the gap that se pa rated him from the leader. With one lap remaining, the leader's margin was only 10 seconds . On the final circulation of the tra ck, Barth tried numerous lines, trying to pas s Stapula . The two riders co llided once when their lines crossed while climb ing a hill. Neithe r rider fell, b ut both had to re ga in the ir c o m pos ure . Barth's chan ce of ga me ring the lead was sta rting to fad e. "I knew I had to get Mik" in the woods." Barth said. "Passing was suc h a cha llenge , so I put some pressure on him, hop ing he wou ld mak e a mistake." That' s exactly what occurred . As the duo went into a comer, Stapula hit a root, pitchi ng himse lf an d his KTM into a tree . Barth took over the lea d and finished the day on top in the 200cc class. Sta pu la recovered and finished one m inut e behind Barth . O n the da y, Barth was the top non -Expert in seventh, and Sta pula was ninth. Perris Raceway D reie r Ic e s 'e m B y KENNY MORRIS PERRIS, CA, MAY 6 Dana Dreier took the overa ll win in the 80cc (O11) class with a 1-2 punch at the finai round of the Haro Bicycles S pring Shootouts at Perris Raceway . The Haro Spring Shootout demon- cue I e strated how ta lented the Mini riders at Perris Race way are. The 5Occ, 60c c and 80cc classes were all exciting throughout the series, but at the final round it was Dreier's day to shine. When the 80cc (0 - 11) field took off to the first tum . Dreier blasted o ut into the lead , followed by Chappy Fiene and Drake Plageman . Fres h off his first Ama te ur Na ti ona l m a in event in Las Vegas, Dre ier wa s lo ok ing smooth out front. Fiene wa s a ble to kee p Dr e ier in sig ht , but he co u ldn' t ga in a ny g round. Plag eman ha s been racin g an 80 cc b ik e for a bo ut s ix m o nt hs now, an d he 's ad ap ting very well; while running th ird, he was ab le to keep Fien e hon e st for a of co uple lap s. Meanwhile, Dreier was rid ing in the zone - he wa s abl e to pull away from the pa ck a s the laps wor e down . When the c hec ke re d fla g wav ed for the first mote, Dreier took the win, followed by Fiene and P1ageman. The se cond moto se rved up so me ma jor dram a. When the gate dro pped. Fiene reele d off the ho le sh ot, followed by Plag e man a nd Dreier . The three riders approached the second tum and Dreier tried to outb rake the othe r riders . Dreie r's front end wa shed out and he quickly found himself gong face first into the d irt. He qu ickly got up , but he had to kick the bike a few times to ge t it sta rted . Meanwhile, F iene was the leade r, and Pla geman was glued to his rear fender in second. They both were stre tchi ng a huge lead while Dreier tried to get himself toge the r. When Dreier finally got going again, he was all by hims elf in last place. Fien e led for a cou ple laps , but then he began to make mista kes. Plagem an was the re to ca pitalize on those mistakes, which allowed him to move into the lead. Dreier was riding like a man on a mission, as he passed Curtis McLellan for th ird . Mc Lellan tried to co me back with a pass of his own, but Dreier was looking forward a nd den ied McLellan the pa ss. Plageman was hav ing his best ride yet on an nD VU'S JJUNE 13 , 2 00 1 41
