' He'll be all right in a co uple of weeks. ' said Bisha. Qualifying Notes: Will Davis' engine proble ms turned over the first heat to Kenny Cool beth. It was over two seconds faster than the other three. Ric h King. Chris Carr and J oe Kopp's heat times were all within three tenths of a second of each other. Wi th a short field of riders. two semis were run instead of the normal three. Three riders would advance from each. Mi ke Hacker ran away wi th the first. while Kevin Varnes took a photo-finish win over Paul M organ in the second. Joe Kopp's Grand N ational Championship titie defense is gelling str onger. Kopp now holds a nine-point advantage over the man he depo sed. Chris Carr. Pre-season favorites W ill Davis and Rich King are suddenly 3 1-points down . Kopp picked up $5305 to go with his 23 points. It was a solid eff ort for the whole Corbin Team. besides Kopp' s and Co olbeth's to p two. the Hayden brothers Nicky and Roger Lee finished seventh and 16th. respect ively . C h ris C arr is fast becom ing Kopp's main challenger. ' 1 didn' t know it was Joe behind me. I was st ill try ing to go forward ." said Carr. "I didn't get defensive or anything. I just wanted to make whoever it was work real hard to get by me. He had to. I made him wo rk for a while. but once he got by me he had a good head of steam going. He was wo rking the best of everybody ." B a d luck continues to dog Will Davis. Davis was holding off a persis tent Kenny Coolbet h in the first heat when his XR failed. ' W e broke something. I don 't really know what - piston, crank. cam, something. ' said Davis. " It started tyin g up. I saw what place I was in and tried to salvage a transfer. as long as I'd hold it wide open it wo uld run. but as soo n as I backed off . it would just shut down. ' Davis was forced on to his back-up in the semi and he was able to grab a second with a last-lap pass in the first semi. "The back-up bike is a good motorcycle. but it just didn't run like the other one. ' Davis said. 'In pract ice I was turning in the high 20s and on the back-up it was 2 1.7s and 8s.· T e r ry Poovey rolled an XR750 out of the t ruck and parked the fastest Honda left on the c jrcuit. " I haven't ridden a Harley in four or five years. but I feel okay about tonigh t ," Poovey said. ' I've never been on that bike until here to night . so ninth. for me that's pretty good . That' s why I got off the Honda. results . I just wasn't' gett ing any. I'm only going to ride the Honda at Du Quoi n and Sp ringfield. The half miles are too hard on the Honda. You have to twing le it on the half miles and then It breaks the case s. there just aren' t eno ugh spare parts. ' Bryan Bigelow feels he has reached a turning poin t in what has been a frustrating season . ' 1 though t I should have been up there a littl e closer. but fro m a seco nd-row start. fift h's pretty good.' said Bigelow . " It's like back to normal, the way Bryan Bigelow likes to race. Everythi ng is worki ng. and I' m starting to get my confidence back. W e' re 11th in the points . Anytim e last year if you 'd have said I was 11th in the points I'd have been pretty mad. The way the year has been going. it hasn't been real friendly. My co nfidence hasn't been very high all year . but this is a big boost. I know everybody talks about their team. but these guy s work harder. for me. than anyone ever has. It was a good building day for us. I think we can do a littl e bit better. I can' t wait for the rest of the year now ." Johnny Murphree also hopes to see the light at the end of the tunnel. ' I' m starting to feel like I need to make points every week. and I need to do better and bett er. " said Mu rphree . ' 1 was really looking forward to this race. All week long I was looking to be the fastest guy here. but I just never really got fast . I just kind of drove around. I'll lake a fourt h out of the deal. that' s for sure."
