PO RTLAND, MI, APR. 22 Th e Michigan Hare Sc ram bles Ser ies ki ck ed off w ith ro u nd one in Portland , just west of Lan sing . Th is season marked the debut of the state ' s Expert clas s. This cla ss is one of the final steps to help mainstream the Michigan series. A larger-tha n-expect c rowd o f 400 com petitors ove rflowed this even t. The weather had been ide al leadin g up to thi s race, bu t j u st moments befo re th e rac e sta rted, t he heaven s opened an d a lar ge amount of rain fell . All the m aintenance that had bee n don e to th is 4 -m ile trac k quickly di ssol ved, leaving th e co urse a quagmir e. At the start, Holid ay Powersports ' Kawa saki pilot Syd Gallt grabb ed the holeshot. T he firs t tum was not kind to KTM -mounted Corey Parlin. "My brother sai d a Kawasa ki tagged m y rear tire ," Parlin repo rted . "There was nothi ng I could do except fall." Whe n Core y Calkins left the starting li ne, his bi k e sli pped into neutral, leavin g hi m near the back of his clas s. How ever, he went on to a solid victory in th e Formula Unlimited heat. In the fo ur-la p Open Superbik e heat , Alan Sc hmidt led eve ry lap , ahea d of D uga n and Mike Sull ivan. The 250cc Gra nd Prix w as led fro m th e sta rt by Steve Dahl strom on an exception ally fast TZ2 50. It took Patric k Dowd 's bl azin g co rner speed and braking brav ado to finally m ak e the pa ss for the win on the la st lap. By lunch , it WaS sprinkli ng, and eve ryo ne switched to wet tires. On th e start of the 10 lap Open Superbike m ain, a tight pack of fiv e 56 M AY 23 , 200t • c ue I e through th e lappers whi le Su ll ivan was held up . It was pointed out to referee Shawn Roberti th at Du ga n h ad rid den th e heat rac e o n a GSX -R I OOO and the main on a GSX -R750, unwitt ingly violati ng a rul e req uiring tha t th e sam e frame be used in both races. Dugan was disqu alifi ed and th e rest of th e field advan ced one position. In the conc urrent 250cc GP race, respe ct ed ice -racer Dowd was showi ng his ma stery of th e slippery condi tio ns. Dahl strom was riding qu ickly but with littl e contro l. After a fright en ing slide in high-speed tu m seve n, he call ed it qu it s. ceding secon d pla ce to Herb Wagner. The last ra ce o f th e day was Northwest Mot or cycl e Fo rmula Un limited cl ass, a ne w addition to the OMRRA sche dule . Sch midt da nced a clumsy pirouett e, att empting to save his bike, on ly to drop it gentl y on the g rid. T he second- to -last rid er wa s through turn one, half a mile away, before Schmidt rej o ined t he race. By th e t ime he came aro und fo r th e fir st lap, he was chas ing the "ta il-end Charlie" - but by lap fiv e, he was seven th. Mean while, by mi drace. Dugan had a lead of m ore than half a mile. Schm idt drove ha rd and , with only two laps to go , he moved into seco nd , but Dugan rem ained safely o ut of reach at the checke rs. Eventually , Calk ins and Parli n m ade it to the front of the pac k . Th e pai r swapped the lead a number of tim es. La ppers were sta rt ing to become a prob lem . Many of th e backm ark ers were virt ually just trying to survi ve . With two laps rem ain in g , Calkins was 10 seconds do wn from L ans ing Cycle/Klotz/ Mec hanix fAnswerfWhite Power Fil ters-b ack ed Parlin . The leader s were fo ll owed closely by Be njamin a nd Dunlap . Parlin and Calkins caught a la pper in a te ch nical portion of the track; Parli n went to the rig ht and Calkins ventu red to th e left . This wa s th e deciding factor in the rac e - Calkins got stuc k whil e Parlin was able to cruise to the fin is h and ga in th e top spo t on th e da y. Ca lk ins quic kly rem oved hi s bi ke from the m ud an d co ntin ued to pursue Parlin , bu t h is error a llowed Benjam i n and Groves Motor spo rts/ N Style/ IMS/Spy /O' Neal backed Dunlap to catch Calkins. At the fi nish, Parlin had extended his lead to just ove r tw o minutes. Benja mi n was next , fo llowed closely by Dunlap. After some bad luck , Calkins was fourth, and the fast -start ing Gallt was fi fth . The sixth -pla ce rider was Planet Honda's Scott Bar clay . Moose/ Ara i/Torcosponsored Erik Dudek m ad e a fine debut in seve nth . O nly a few minutes behind hi s son was Rodn ey B enj ami n in eig ht h , and A aro n Wegner was ni nth .
