As Welch was ridi ng a fl awl ess race out front , Th alheim er was conte nt with second, as he wa s going for th e ove rall win . Welch took th e checkers, and Thalhei mer ca me in a distant second. Cockru m was third, and Hond a ride r Au stin Svang re n from Ken new ic k, Washington , wa s fourth. O ne of th e m ost enjoya ble cla sses of th e da y to watch was t he 250cc Nov ice cla ss. So me of th e riders can surp rise the fa ns wit h so m e eye-p o p p i ng mo ves . In m o t a o n e , Yamaha rid er Je ff B otefuhr from Irrigon, Ore go n, j umped out to the lead, but Bri an Kuk es, o n his Les Schwa b tire-shod Hond a, went from a seven th-place start to second in j ust under half a lap , and the race w as on as Botefuh r and Kukes pull ed awa y from t he pack. On the final lap , Kuk es m ade his m ove, setting Botefuh r up on a double j ump and ma k ing the pl c ture-perfect pass to take the m ota win. Bote fuh r and Yam aha's Tim Wheatl ey rou nd ed out the top three.
