This one, h o w ev er , was m uch cl o se r than most peop le kne w incl ud ing Le iv an himself. "For most of the race, th ere were six or seven of us in a train , having a great rac e," Leivan recounted. " Go ing into the last lap , I. got int o the lead and tried to get away. Then Forrester got around me when I was hung up in a fence. He crashed with a few miles to go and I was back in th e lead, figuring that was pretty much it. T hen Kenny Yount about caught me slee p ing there at the end . I loo k ed beh ind m e at the finish line and he was ri ght there , t ell ing me, 'Good rac e.' I had no idea he was that close ." The Nasty C ree k faci lity h o st ed some 350 riders . The 10 .7 miles of te chnic al, ro c k y , off -ca m ber t rail included po rtio ns of th e A TV co urse and a spectator-friend ly grass; track. at the Nasty Creek facility. Tem peratures aro u nd 85 and the tough tra c k co nd itio ns meant the two -hour R Oak Hili MX Park: Josh Demuth (9) and Ryan St. Cyr battle lor position in the li rst 125cc Expert moto in Decatur, site 01 round two 01 the Texas Series. Demuth made the pass and went on to l inish second but returned in moto two to take the win and the overall. Marshall closed in on Du rrett on lap two to take over second. Conner and Marshall stayed close for fou r la p s before Marshall went for h is gun belt on lap five and passed Conner in th e gu lly to take the lead. Conner hung with Marshall throughout the remain der of the race to finish second, fol lowed by Fulton and Chase Romero . Clayton Miller abs conded with the h oleshot in the. second rn o t o , w ith Marshall banging at his back door. Marshall took the lead on th e first lap, whil e Conn er got beh ind M ill er and began to badger him fo r th e number two spot. Conner made his move on lap two , displacing Miller to th ird, and th ey rem ain ed in those positions fo r th e rest of the ra ce. Squires took th e w in in the fi r st 125cc Exp ert moto , having pass ed Montoya on th e fir st lap. Ryan St. Cy r ra ced in second for the firs t tw o la ps before Josh Demuth charged for the pos it io n an d to o k it. In th e se c on d moto , D emuth was out fro nt off the st art and stayed there to the finish to take th e overall win v ia a 2 -1 co unt to Sq uires' 1-2 tally for second . Marshall earned his third star in the 250cc Intermediate contest. Miller took the fi rst -m oto honors. wi th Marsh all in second and Thomas Schuler third. T he second moto saw Ma rshall ta k e th e win and the overall , followed by Miller and Schul er. Riley Kurosky had a banner da y , win n in g b o t h the M inib ike ( 14-16) and Mi nibike Open eve nts with a four -m ote streak. Joining Kurosky in double win s we re Dil lo n Van W ay in th e Te en y Mini (7- 8) a nd M ini M in i (6-8) categori es; and Richard White in the Mini Mini (9 - 11) and Mini Mini Open events. Once t h ings sorted out , those three were joined by Leivan on his WR426 , KTM 250 - m ount e d Youn t , Mike W ind ma nn, Chad Bu senbark , Matt Purs ley , Doug St one and Jerry Hemann , all of whom were less th an a m inu t e apa rt at lap's end. Duncan was the first casualty. Just before th e scoring check, he was hit in th e face by a rock kicked up by Shaw 's rear tire. His eye started to swell shut, ending his day prematurely . M ean w h il e , Shaw c ontrolled th e pace up fron t, with Forr est er, Leivan , Bus enb a rk , H eman n an d Yo u nt all h a ng i n g t igh t a n d m i x i n g it u p , putting nea rly two minutes on the res t of the field . A m ere 24 second s separated the fro nt-runne rs after tw o la ps and an hour and fiv e m in utes. On lap t h r e e , p o s i t i o n s were swapped a b it . Wh en F o rr est er ha d tr ouble with a lap p er, Leivan move d into secon d. Then Lei van chose a different line th rough an off-camber sec tio n, while leader Shaw and th e rest of the pack went th e safer , r erouted d irection . Th is cost Lei van a p os ition . as Hemann moved into second . Hemann was lo oking for a wa y aroun d Sh aw , b u t he washed out the front end and went do w n at th e end of the la p . Lei van m o v ed ba ck in t o th e runner -up spot and put th e heat on Sh aw. T he pas s ca me at the end of p it row , w it h an outsi de line ente ring the creek th at led to the checkpoi nt .
