ba ck int o the du st a litt le bit , like after I got fu eled. I got close to hi m after that, and he made a little m ist ake and I g ot t he le a d . It w o rk e d o ut then because it's a wh ol e lot easier when yo u ca n see. I was g oin g t o try t o stretch it ou t , but th e lappers slo wed me down a little, an d Fredd y got right back and found me . If I made a mis take. it would have been his ." F in ishing up the th ird lap it was Smith , Andrews , Watts , Laffert y , Woodford , McLevy, Yamaha riders Robbie Jenks and Jason Raines, and FMF /Suzuk i 's Stev e Hatch , and unfortunately for the spectators , it stayed that way with just a littl e shu ffli ng of positions all the way to th e finish . Andrews never backed off, though, and kept hunting for the opportunity to get his race back. " Slo w guys would come up , and I'd be beh ind him and he 'd go one way and I'd go the other; the lapper would go the o ther , and we were splitting lappers left and right and we had a good ti me riding ," Andrews said. " But we'd get into dusty spots and he'd floor it , and I'd have to lay ba ck so I coul d see . It was pretty dangerous out there . I' d j ust have to hope for a lapper to slow him up , and sure enough he 'd have to slow up. T he last lap he came up on some lappers go ing into the c reek , which wa s on ly about a mile from the finish , and I got right up on his rear fender, but th ere wa sn 't anything I coul d do. We came up the hill , and he go t into the du st and j ust powered away." Watts was only a handful of seco nds behind An drews, but might just as well have been m iles behind. "I never saw Shane out th ere," said Andrews, "but I (Above left) Last round's winner Fred Andrews snared the holeshot again - and soldiered on to a runner-up fin i sh. (Above) Defending champ Shane Watts pushed hard all day. b ut cou ldn't g et out of the dust and settled f or third. (Left) Robbie Jenks was t he top Yamaha rider in s i xth p la ce. (Right ) J osh McLevy put in a fi ne rid e on h is Honda CR for fifth ov erall. know he's a com petitor and knew that he was going to be ther e. 1was looking for him, and I think one lap he wa s pretty close, but I'm not sure if he got into lappers or it was the dust or what. I never really felt him back there, but I was looking for him." The last two laps resembled a long freight train in the dust, as none of the positions in the top 12 changed . Sm ith took the w in and padded his ser ies -poin ts lead to 14 over Watts , 145 to 131. Andrews ' second helped h im stay in third pla ce in the points with 9 9 total.
