J ust in En os went 4 -4 fo r fo urt h , wh il e J .D. Moore rounded out th e top five with a 3 -6 score . T he Sup ermin i class featured a ]3 rider field , and Suzuki jockey "Qu ick" Ni ck Da vis scored wire-to -w ire victo ri es in both motos. Brya r Perry posted a solid 2 -2 score for second on th e da y . Dav is , the only Expert in t h e bunch , pretty much had things h is w ay as he raced uncontested in both motos, while Perry had his hand s full with He n d e rson e arl y o n i n both m oto s . Howev er , on ce he got b y , Perry gapped Henderson and left the rac ing fo r th ird behind him. Henderson and Pennington swapped th ird place fin ishes, with Henderson taking the all -important second-mote third place spot for thi rd overall on the day. Pennington finished up with a 3 4 score fo r fourth . Norris put in a consistent 5- 5 showing to round out the top five . CN Atencio Tops at Hollister Hills Bv JIM AND J U ST I N E N O S HOUJSTER,CA, A . 22 PR K awasak i -m ounted Danny Atencio b ested a 20 -rid er field o f 80 cc Beg inners at round tw o of the 200] AMP / GFI Spring Series, sponsored by Fox an d Yamaha of Modesto. Ut il izing good sta rts , Atencio p ut together a so lid ] -] score , ahead of runner-up J o sh Fittro , who t a ll i e d up a 4 -2 score on the da y . Despite a hard rain two da ys prior, the AMP crew amazingly managed to muster up an excellent track and welcomed over 220 ri d ers on a perfect spri ng day. The only bad part of the track wa s the start strai ght, which made for some interesting gate p ick s. About l 0 feet out from the gate, riders got bogged down in oatmeal-like con dit ions for about the next 50 feet , and those who couldn't negotiat e the section well had their work cut out for th em by the first t urn . Many ride rs opted for th e normally vacant outside gates, search ing for dry land, and the results were m ixed. In the f irst 80c c B eg inner moto, Nick McKinnon , gated on the first in si d e gate , g rabbed the holeshot, ahead of Atencio , Matthew Lo zad a and Fitt ro. The foursome battled early on until Atencio made a move on the uphill double , tak ing the lead and steadily pull ing awa y from th e fi eld . F ittro an d Lo za d a also ma de th eir wa y by McKinnon , but Fittro ran into a double dose of troub le after that. While Atencio motored on , Fittro first went down and then later went off the tr ack while avo idin g a down ed rider. A t th e ch eckers , A t en ci o took t he win , followed by Lozada and McKin non. Fittro survi ved th e m ish aps to finish fourth , while Bu ck Fo rd ro unded ou t the top five. In moto two , McKinnon again took the same inside gate; how ev er , the resu lt wasn 't nearly the sam e, as he ended up getting a m idp ack start, while Atencio led th e field into the fir st tum. Once again, Atencio gapp ed th e fi eld , leaving the race for secon d to Fittro and Ford, a way be h ind h im . T he duo spent the entire moto in a heated battle; wh ile F ittro he ld the second spot, Ford used every inch of the track to try to get around him . In the end, Atencio went on to take a w ire -to-wire victory , wh ile Fi tt ro earned a hard-fought second , over Ford. James Welsh took fourth , and Lozada rou nded out the to p five . Loza da's 2-5 effort proved good eno ugh for th ird o verall on the day, foll owed by Ford 's 5 -3 tally for fourth . Mc Ki nnon put in one of his better efforts for fifth overall via a 3-8 posting. In 80 c c Nov i c e a c ti on , Garr ett Henderson chalked up a ]-] score , bea ting out Honda -mounted Core y Penn ington . Moto on e proved the most exciti ng, as Henderson and Pennington check ed out early and cha l leng ed each other all th e wa y to the c heckers. W ith Hen de rson r i ght in front o f h im , Pennington tr ied an ins ide line at the tum before the fin ish and nearly pu ll ed off the win .
