Kyle Lewis rode well on a Moto XXX VZ426F. and Ryan Hughes of course gave Honda' s CRF450R its National debut. John Dowd put in a strong ride on his KTM 520 SX for ninth overall. Just behind him was White Brothers racer Spud Waiters, who put in an amazing 10-13 ride for 10th on his VZ426 F. Glen Helen was featuring an exciting new look for this year's National. with a second huge uphill joining now-traditional Mt. St. Helen's. The new sectio n - called Yamaha Mountain - was preceded by a b;g step-up jump that only the 250cc-c1 ass riders were cleari ng. The fo llowing descent was so steep that the rocks and dirt clods knocked loose by the bikes would frequently pass the riders as they braked down the hill. The soil was near-perfect. and riders and fans alike expressed enthusiasm for the new layout (though Ricky Carmichael did say the track was a bit fast for his liking). Glen Helen has been the roughest National the last couple of seasons, and this year's track was brutally choppy by day 's end. Lap times were in the three-minute range. which made for 13-lap motos. • Dowd (KTM); 10. Spud Walters (Yam); 11. Robbie Reyna rd (Yam); 12 . A ntho ny A ma radio (Ya m) ; 13 . A fter missing the previou s w eek 's Las Vegas Super cross with a crash -induced sore chest (that we failed to report in that story), Ezra Lusk showed up to race at Glen Helen. The Team Honda rider rode well to post a devilish 6-6 sixth overall, but admitted he'd been affected by the injury. "I bruised some ribs and tore some cartilage in between about three or four ribs," Lusk said. "It was pretty gnarly - I did everything except breaking them. It causes problems in your back and all kinds of muscle problems. I was struggling with trying to keep my back in line and to keep my upper-body strength up. It was pretty tough today." GNCC Champion S han e Watts showed up at Glen Helen and qualified for the talent-laden 125cc class without much problem. The Australian KTM rider is known for having fun when he races. and after finishing 31st in moto one, he intentionally did a huge. smoking burnout on the concrete launch pad as the 30-second sign went sideways to start moto two - a move that both amused and co nfused the other riders and mechanics. C ycle News test rider Chris Sprenkel rode the magazine's Honda CR250 test bike at the Glen Helen National. and he's planning to do so at the next five Nationals. as well. Sprenkel. who will contest the Canadian National MX Series after that point. worked his way up near the top 15 in moto one before being slowed by a fading rear shock. eventually finishing 23rd overall via 1925 finishes. Marty Moates , J im Gibson, Rex Staten and dirt-tracker David Aldana doing battle. Holley took his Ya maha to the w in, eve n throwing a one-hander over a big step-up double on the . back straight. Several h e lic o p t e r s filled the sky over Glen Helen. including one that was painted red and sporting Woo dy W oodpeck er grap hics . The Briles Helicopter Service chopper is the same one that is typically hired to support Honda' s Baja race team. and that company's vice president was give n a rid e in it to th e race trac k . Many race fans capitalized on the opportunity to get a birds-eye view of the track for just $10. Incidentally. a smoke-tratlinq small plane put on a brief aerobatics display during opening ceremo nies . Though most knew that he wo uldn't be competing. many fans hoped that Supercross racer Jeremy McGrath would put in a spectating appearance at Glen Helen. The Southem California native did not attend the National. but he had a good excuse. According to his father Jack, Jeremy and long-time girlfriend Kim Maddox became engaged In the week before race day. No wedding date has yet been set. After nearly winning last year's 125cc title , Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Stephane Roncada put in a creditable ride in his 2 50cc o utdoor debut. finishing 7-8 for eighth overall. "The track was the roughest its ever been." the Frenchman said. "I had some suspension problems that I still have to wo rk on. My bike isn't set up the way I want it yet. but we're getting there. I felt really good out there. I didn't get tired. It' s a lot more work [in the 250cc classl . The bike's bigger. and there are mo re guy s going fas t. .. cue I e n e _ s MAY 23 , 200 1 11
