Mikki Ko laczs rode h er RM80 to a n impre ssiv e s ix t h in th e M i n i Juniors. with th e top honors goi ng to Josh Edwards. Scho olboy action featured a battl e in the mud, with Heath Da vi s taking th e ea rly lead ov er Justin Spuller. Davis had a few probl em s adjusting to a borrowed bi ke (his brother's) and gave way to the chargi ng Spuller. Suzukim ounted Brandon Christin e clim bed to t he lower part of the podium to rounding out the top thr ee. Kri s Hand took the win in the Pee Wee One division , over KTM-m ounted Au stin Prim o . Th is m arked Hand 's fi rst victory aboa rd th e Cobra. Bill Reiss sho wed his wares after ret urn ing to Gal ion for the first ti me in 15 years. Reiss, the 1986 overall cham pion. smoked both the Senior Tw o and Four-S tro ke cl asses. Mitc h Davis held on to ta ke th ird in th e Fo ur -Stroke div isi o n , wh ile Greg Ne w m an pulled in fo r fourth. At the Nascar/Super IT season opener. youn g Casey Yarrow and local veteran Ricky Pearce battl ed in every race they ran toge ther. In the first heat. Mark Cem icky, aboard his Honda CR500, got an outsta ndi ng ho leshot. Yarrow was secon d. w ith Pearce in thi rd. Co ming o ut o f t he hairpin , Ce m icky was bein g pres sure d by Husaberg- mo u nted Yarrow. Pearce was trying his hardest to get into th e picture. O ver the dirt j ump, Yarr ow flew past Cem ick y and nearly landed on the pavement straightaway. Yarrow WlJS trying to stretch hi s lead, but Cern icky was giving it everything he ha d . Th e rlJce fin ished wi th Yarrow in front, Cern ick y in seco nd lJnd Pearce a close third. In th e second heat , local boy " Red" Ed Coffey got the holeshot bu t was passed by Bakersfieltl"s Bru ce Sellars. David Hopfe and Josh Chisum . M ot o cro sser Ch i sum went around Hopfe and eventually Sellars for the win . Sellars and Hopfe finished oecond and thi rd, foll owed by Coffey. The cro wd-pleasing Tenninator Dash consists of the top eight qualifiers. Every lap, the last two riders are removed unti l there are four riders rem aining for a two -lap final dash . Casey Yarrow, Pearce, Ryan Gifford and Allen Yarrow were the finll l four, and the final dash was the ClJsey Yarro w show from start to finish. In the Sportsman ma in , Hopfe got th e holeshot, followed by Chisum, Em ie Lyles and Sellars. Chisum passed Hopfe and led until lap six. Sellers and Ly les were in thi rd and fourth , 76 MAY 16. 2001 • and Sid Payne and Coffey were fifth and sixth . Payn e passed Coff ey on lap five . Hopfe led goi ng into lap eighL Co m ing into the chicane, Chisum high-Sided ove r the back of Hopfe 's Yamaha. At th is point, Hopfe was out in fro nt by about 20 bik e length s, but Sellars was reeling in Hopfe every second. Hop fe took his first m a in -event w in of h is c a reer , but onl y by about fi ve bik e lengths. Sellars was second . Lyles , Payne and Coffey were third. fourth and fifth . The top five were all from Bakersfield. In the Premier m ain, Pearce darted off the li ne into the fi rst comer, followed by Casey Ya rro w and Ce rn ic k y . Ce rn icky tried to g o around the outs ide of Pea rce and Yarro w but too k himself o ut. Pearce and Yarrow q ui ckl y sep arated the mselves fro m the rest of t he field. Sellars and Hopfe were thir d and fourth . Cemi cky wor ked back up to fifth . Yarrow took th e lead fro m Pearce for ab ou t a lap , until Yarrow wobbled at the jump en lap four. The cro wd was elect rified by the pass Pearce m ade down the 105-m ph straighta way. Pearce and Yarrow started weaving through lappers, but Pearce couldn't shake off Yarrow . They were neck and neck for the rema ind er. Meanwhile, Cernicky passed Sellars for thi rd. Sellar s fin ishe d fo urth . A pproaching t he j ump for the last tim e, Pear ce and Yarrow ap pr oach ed a la pper. With nowhere to go, Pearce slo we d and Yarrow slammed into him .
