T he heat ca me from 138 ri ders from throughout Montana , all looking for the first ride of th e year. T h i s combination of tacky soil and the first race of the season had the Big Sk y r iders rea dy to tackle the challenge of the 3-m ile racecourse laid out by th e Electric City D irt Riders mot ocross cl ub . Tem peratu res in the 50s k ept th ings crisp an d riders less fati gued during the fi ve sched uled races. Ch ristop her Handl came out on to p of th e 250 cc /Open A class, though not with ou t an epic battle cu lm ina ting in a photo fi nish. A Le Mans run to a dead -eng ine start got the A -class bat tle st a r te d . Jon D ullum ' s Honda CR250 was th e firs t to fi re and cro ss the start li ne, followed by Handl and Jason M ora . Dullum qui ckl y put a fi ve- second lead on Handl , with Mora back by another 10 seco nd s. Georg e Chamarro , afte r suffering a dead -last fou r-st roke start, was qu ic k ly slicing his way throu gh the pack. At the 20 -minute m a r k , Mora force d h is St ev e 's Spo rt s C en t erbacked Suzuk i in fron t of Handl and W c ha lle nged Dullum for the lea d . Th e batt le fo r th e lead lasted for 20 min ut es; th en Mora pu t his Suzuk i in th e lea d o n the c heckpoi nt tu rn . Han d l th en poun ced o n the t iring D ullum and tumed up the wick on his Sports City Cyc lery- backed Honda CR2 50 , which put him on Mora's rear fender. The lead trio rece ived the wh ite flag , followed by Chamarro, who was now in fourth place but couldn't make up any ground on the leaders, even with his 13,500-rpm Yamaha wailing. W ith half a lap left , Hand l was showing a wheel and a fender to Mora, looking for a way int o the lead . The crowd was enjoying the intense racing, an d cheering for the riders grew louder on the last straight to the fi nis h -line tum . Mora held tight down the inside stra ight as Handl pulled ahea d on the ou tside. The ex tra corner speed from Hand l' s charge did th e damage, giv ing hi m half a wheel on Mo ra at the finis h. "My Honda ran great," said Hand!. "I got some arm pump early in th e race and back ed off for a lap and settled down , and then I charged. I knew Mora wa s in the groove and th at I couldn 't win by following him , so I pin ned it on th e outsi de line, and it work ed.." Exhauste d fr o m the race, Mora was happy with h is ride . " I gave it everyth ing lhad. " said Mora . "Boy , am I tire d." Dullum came in th ird , fo llowed by Cham ar ro in fourth . The racecourse co vered m ost of the motocross club' s p rop ert y . Sp eeds varied from as slow as 5 mph to as high as 65 mph. Terrain incl uded the normal rocks, gumbo, wood chips and y uc c a plants , with all large jumps removed. The track was made for fun and to take away the motocrossers' advantage and give the off-road guys something different, also. The Vintage-class start turned into quite a spectacle when Jack Miller dumped his clutch and sent his ancient Kawasak i's front end skyw ard in the m iddle of the pack. Th e ensu ing scra m b le t o g et o ut of h is w ay gave CR480 p il ot B r i an Kaise r th e lead, which he held to the fi nish line. " I thought it w a s pretty ne a t I didn't get taken out at the start," said Bob Bald erst on , wh o finished second. " I used all of the old Husky's suspen sion, so I'm pretty sore." The Women's class experienced some extra exci tement when race leader Marissa Richard cross-rutted and sent her Kawasaki cart-wheeling toward a local TV crew covering the event. "I was lo oki ng th rou gh the camera and su ddenly realized t h ere was a bike flying at m e - wo wl" exclaimed TV 5 newsm an Ryan Chivarini. Richard qu i c k l y remo u nted an d he ld on for the win . "I went down a cou ple of times, so b o t h arms are sk i n n e d up , " sa id Richa rd . "I ca n 't be l iev e the paramedics only have iodine. But th e race was fun." E lectric City Dirt Rid ers cha rged an entry fee of one dollar or a can of foo d, with all proceeds going to t he Great Falls Food B~nk. At the end of the day's racing , the Lewis and Clark Grand Prix donated $400 and 231 po unds of food to the food bank. Yam aha-m ounted Mark Koontz used consistent 4 -4 finishes to nab third overall. One of th e day 's l ar g est clas ses was th e 250cc Vintage (Pre -1975) Amateur class. Yamaha MX250 mounted Michael Cox commanded the fi rst moto, ahead of Honda rider Dan Cunha and CZ pilot Loren Smith, but Cox didn't fare as well in moto two - a fifth-place fi nish dropped him to second overall . Cuh na's 2 -2 plac- O ings earned him th e o verall win , fol lowed b y C o x an d B u lt a c o r ider Travis Anderberg . th e winner of moto two and third overall via 6 - 1 pla cings. Bryan Anderb erg (5 -4) netted fou rth , ah ead of Smith (3-6 ) . Joe Casey - perha ps the rider with th e m ost wins in Vintage racing in the Northwest - con tinued his str in g of wi ns with a double-m oto victory in the 2 5 0 c c Exper t / Inte rm ed i at e Vintag e cl ass. CZ -m oun t ed Blak e Landon and Ka w as aki jockey John Ulver trailed Casey , with Landon gra bbing seco nd o verall vi a 3 -2 p lacings and lead ing Ulver (2- 3 ) into the top three. in the adjoin ed Intermediat e cl ass, Honda mounted Cod y Sprague ma de a clean sweep to lead Pete Unger (3 -2) and Yamaha YZ pilot J on Wall (2- 3) . Husqvarna -mounted J im Sawtell scored a win in the 250cc Evolution class, splitting moto victories with Honda rider Jonathan Stuart.
