Further back , Missouri rider Eugene Spruetels and Louisiana's Ron Wi pf were wag ing th eir own battle. Sp ruetels was able to hold off W ipf for the third place money. McMahan shot out of the gate in the second moto with anoth er holeshot, but he couldn 't hold back a charging Hyde. As they reached the triple on the back side of the track, McMahan bobbled slightly and Hyde pounced on the opportunity, as M cMahan could onl y doubl e . Meanwhile, Robbie Keel , Greg Crane and Brian Brewer were battl ing over fourth place in a tight race . With the Intermediates on a second gate after the Experts, they were ab le to test their stamina , as they were runn ing eight laps on a two -minute track. Crane showed some endurance as he pushed past Keel on lap five. Brewer began to drop back and couldn't hold the pace. Cannon won, with Lester a steady second, and Witherspoon nailed down third . The second moto began like the first - with a Cannon holeshot. How ever, Cannon went down in the first whoop section and Lester took the lead and , for the second week in a row, Canno n was in last place. Witherspoon was in second , and Crane was ho ld ing o f f Brew er and Keel. Cannon got going again and was on the gas . K ee l put so m e moves on Brewer and moved into fourth. On the next lap, Cannon moved right up on Keel and Brewer and passed both of them on th e tr iple. On the next lap, Lester was still ou t front, Witherspoon w a s se cond , Cran e was third and Cannon was char gi ng. Crane left the do or open in a tight corner and Cannon w ent b y f or t hi r d and set his sights on Witherspoon . As they came by the tower , Cannon held it o n and sailed by Witherspoon for second. It looked like a replay of the Smithv ille round, when Lester he ld Cannon off at the fin ish for th e win, but Ca nnon wasn't having an y of it. Lap six was nothing but Cannon ; he railed by Lester and started pulling away for the win , leaving Leste r second and Witherspoon third.
