" come away from Genk at a ll a fte r a first - turn crash a nd another fall la t er Yves Demaria (7) and Mickael Mashio (9) la u nc h h igh over the 25,OOO-strong Belgian crowd. This Is the first of three GPs that will be held In the country this year, not to mention the MX des Nations. on . Still , 15th overall gave him at least some p le a sure. "We all came t o gether pretty hard going into the c orner , a n d I c ras hed ," M c F a rl an e sa id. " I was dead -last, and BRIEFLY••• Joel Smets told the worl d he will race the Southwic k round of the Am e rican Nationals. but it seems there could be more to it. Smets is still suffering from his groin injury and will only race in America if the injUry is healed. Smets has had pain from the injury since the first round in Spain and is still suffering. There's a chance he will not be fit for Southwick. Sco tt Sheak. who has return ed to America afte r the fir st four rounds of the 125cc W orld Championships. is very disappointed with his UFO Honda team. So disillusioned was Sheak that he failed to race the last-chance qualifier on Saturday, and therefore did not make it into the Sunday Grand Prix. " I just don't trust anyone in the team," Sheak said. "The bike was doing some weird things. and I did not want to risk injury on it. I have put in so much of an effort. and to be honest. we have not done testing since I got the bike back in March . I had no alternative but to return to America ." It seems that the likes of Ricky Carmichael. Travis Pastrana. Sebastien Tortelli. Ezra Lusk and several other top rid ers from the U. S . c ircuit are being contacted about doing some major European Supercross races in the off-se ason. W ith the Bercy Supercro ss set for November 7-9 and a huge German Supercross set for November 15. things could be running hot in Europe in the penultimate month of the year. The prestigious Stad de France Supercross will go ahead in October. but it is unlikely it will be a round of the World Championship Supercross Series. Roger De Coster, .loel Robert, Harry Everts and Geo rges .lobe were all in Genk for the Grand Prix. Robert and Jobe felt that the way GP motocross is at the moment is not so different from the;' day. "So many riders complaining about tracks ." Robert said. " Motocross is so easy now. if you don't like the track. you try not to ride. In our day. we rode in pouring rain, snow. everything." Jo be concurred: " The G enk track wa s good - a mo tocros s track. with mud . stones and everylh ing. I raced on this track in my second Grand Prix. and it is no different today; that' s what motocross ls all about. " Wi th his victory In the Belgian Grand Prix. Stefan Everts now has 46 GP wins . and is only four wins away from Joe l Robert 's 50 victorie s. Q ua lification proved to be painful for several top riders at the Belgian GP. Three-time 125cc World Champion Alessio Chlodi failed to make it through the last-chance-qualiher after a stone got lodged in his bike in his qualification heat and he crashed twice in the LCQ . Paul Cooper - sixth In the 250cc points coming into Genk - also failed to qualify through timed qualification. Cooper broke tw o bikes in the space of 10 minutes and never had the chance to finish qualiftcattcn. Andrea Bartolini will try and return to racing at the end of the Grand Prix season. Bartolini. who broke his back in Italy a month ago. is very disappointed and thought about retirement. yet will give it one more go in 2001 (though he doubt s it will be at a Grand Prix). French Yamaha rider Luigi Seguy had a lucky escape at the start of the 125 race . While sitting on the start line. the Frenchman was told by 500c c rider Vico Garcia that his helmet s t ra p w a s not latched . He quickly buckled it just as the five-second board came out. Seguy did in fact crash in the 125cc mot o and should buy Garcia a lottery ticket. n eVIls
