North Carolina State Cha pionship evils Ridge MX Welch, Summey Crowned Champions By D AVID E LLER SANFORD, NC, APR. 1 rec ord 1,151 riders competed at Devils Ridge for the North Carolina Sta te Champ ionsh ip . Slated as one of th e largest amateur races on the East Coast, th is event was also a Loretta Lynn's area qualifier. Winters' Marketing posted a $5000 Pro purse. Tom W elch from Char lotte Hall , Maryland , took home the lion's share of that purse w ith overall w ins in th e 250cc Pro and Over 25 A classes. He was also the 125cc Pro runner -up to Team Green 's Josh Summey, who A 64 MAY 9 , 200 1 • cue • e too k h is f irst North Ca ro l in a St ate Championship as a Pro. The tra ck was in exc ellent shape fo r Sund a y morn ing ' s practic e , bu t by clas s 12 of the first round a seve r th understo rm pa ssed over, with ha il and lightning , which halted raci ng for near ly tw o hours. The only option was to finish the first round of motos to deter mine th e overalls and call it a day . Late in the race, the runn ing order almost changed when Summey blew a comer, allow ing Wa lker to pull alongs ide , but Walker couldn 't make the pass. At the end , it was Welch with the w in , followed by Neese, Summey, Walker and Nee!. In the 125cc Pro contest, Summey led the first lap, with Neese in second and Welch in third , followed by Aa ro n Stancil and Nee!. Jim Chester, fresh off the arenacross circu it , was sixth , battling with Walker. Welch passed Neese and see med to be closing on Summey, but Su mmey put his head down ; he was determi ned to not let t his one get a way, an d h e d idn ' t. Su m mey took th e win , foll owed b y Welch , Neese, Stancil and Nee!. Welch 's Over 25 A championship also came at the expense of Neese, who placed second . Jason Lawrence of Es tell Manor, New Jersey , was the b ig wi nner in the 80cc (9 -1 3) Modi fied cl ass. He led from st art to fin ish wh ile Virg in ia 's Zach Osbourne k ept h im honest . North Caro lina's Austin Stroupe, Pennsylvan ia 's Sean Hack le y and North Caro lina 's Matth ew Will iam s filled ou t th e top fi ve . Osbourne got his reveng e in th e 80 c c ( 7 - 11 ) c l as s a s h e b ested Stroupe again , only th is time for the win . Ha ck ley wa s ag ain up front, as was Broc T ickle and Madison Ham bright, who is doing well after m ov ing up to th e bigger bikes. T he 250c c C class pr ovided a new ex perience for KORE C ycl es ' Jason Koen ig , wh o had been racing 125 s up until th is weekend , but he seems to have ad apted well t o the b igg er mach ines. He pushed Thomas Tripp across the li ne to finish run ner-up and secure hi s q u a lify i n g spot for t h e regionals . He was followed by Bran don Slo an, Dustin Williams and Over 40 rider Ben Stone. Also competing in the Over 30 C class , Stone took the win in that class. The 12 5cc C contest was a barnburner. Four riders had to be put on the en d o f th e gate, as 46 were set to race. Jeremy Sa unders pulled th e holeshot, on ly to fall on the first lap and give the lead to Brandon Ga bbert, who beg an to pull away, leavin g Dustin W ill iam s, Travis Worm sley, Jared Lemm and Alex Harrill to fight it ou t. Saunders remounted and put on a c harge, making it into th e to p five by lap fo ur. Will iam s fell and w as ru n o ve r b y another rider; t h e best he cou ld do after that was seventh. A t the checkers , it was Gabbert with 10 seconds over Wormsley , fol lowed by ea rly lead er Saunders, Harrill and Lemm. " T h i s turno u t wa s d efinite ly a record, and a record I'm not sure we want to eve r b reak , " said Kent Cameron of D evil s Ridge, referring to the fact that som e peop le had to parked as far as a half-m il e awa y . Kawasa ki and Suzuk i were on hand , as were Bubba 's Cycle Shack and the Na tional Series Ballze e rig . Ballze e's own Chad L ou g h made the most of a working weekend. When he wasn 't in the rig selling products , he was on the race track, winnin g th e Four -Stroke di vi s ion .
