The form er was Mik e laRocco pull ing the holeshot, and th e latter was J erem y McGrath leap ing over race doct or J ohn Bodn er as the chec kered flag flew. Shortly after laRocco's surp risi ng strong start, the Amsoil/Dr . Martens/Journeys/Com peti ti on A ccessories rider was overtaken by Mazda Yamaha's McGra th. The two battled for much of th e race, but Mc Grath held the point to the fi nish-line double , which he cle ared as Bodner and other track officials pus hed off the crashed Honda of Bryan Piccir elli , who had pile-driven himself into the face of the land ing jump. Team Yama ha's Tim Ferry was third on his big thumper, and Emig Raci ng 's Michael Byrne also transferred directl y via a distant fourth. " laRocco beat me out of the start, which is pretty uncharacteristi c : McGrath said . "I was like , 'Woahl' I turned the comer, and he kind of bobbled a little. I ca me up besid e him , and from there on , it was ju st a little bit of a match-race ." Th e second heat was only slig htly m ore cred ible , with new 125cc East cham p Travis Pastrana snari ng the holeshot, only to over-cool the fi rst comer and slid e sideways over a bump, co mi ng to a stop and blocking much of the pack behind him. He resum ed racing near the end of the group, only to endo m oments later in the wh oop s. After riding a bit m ore with no front number plate, he pulled off the track for the night. Team Honda 's Ezra Lusk was the prim ary beneficiary, cruising to the win and thro wing in a nac -nac along the way. Carmichael to ok second after a rare non -h ol esho t and a blo ck -pass on Team Honda 's Sebastien Tortelli, who took thi rd in front of T eam Suzuki's Kev in Wi ndham. "I just thi nk tha t bad luck is something you can j ust shrug off," Lusk said . "I' ve been try ing and try ing to shrug it off, and I'm beginning to do th at. Som e other guys are ki nd of taking the luck that I've been getti ng , and I'v e ju st been tryin g to turn it into positive speed and positive attitude, and tryin g to put the th ing up fro nt."
