back there, and then I made a mistake and he got by me." The race started out on a completely different note, with KTM's Lafferty getting a good start and breaking into the lead in the first few tums. Lafferty led the charge for two laps, pressured the whole time by Andrews and Smith, with Raines, Watts, and Suzuki's Mike Kiedrowski right behind. Lafferty was riding well and looked to have it all under control, but though he could pass back to the front the few times Andrews challenged him, he wasn't pulling away. When the pitting started, at the start of the third lap, positions started being shuffled. Andrews came in leading, with Smith and Raines close behind, followed by Lafferty, who was starting to feel the effects of the heat, but still not backing off past fourth place. The battle for striking position behind third was being waged by Lafferty, Honda-mounted Josh McLevy and Kiedrowski. All this time, Smith was holding tightly onto second place, while Watts dropped back to ninth. Spectators questioned if Watts' bike was all right, since he had discovered a problem with his rear brake on the starting line, and rushed back to the pits to replace his whole rear-brake system, returning to the line with only 30 seconds to spare. In typical Watts fashion, however, he waited to make his move until the last lap, being officially scored in seventh place at the start of the final lap, and making the move forward through a field of rapidly overheating racers in the 80-plus-degree air. Coming through at the end of the white-flag lap, it was Andrews in the lead with Smith right on his tail, and McLevy moving into third, followed closely by Kiedrowski, Lafferty and Raines. Raines didn't seem to be showing any problems from the heat, and he easily moved forward past Lafferty and Kiedrowski, and found himself in a perfect position when Andrews went off the bridge. Smith got around Andrews' Kawasaki easily, while Raines and Watts went right over it. By this time, Andrews had scrambled back onto the bridge and picked his bike up, blocking the only line for everyone else, and bringing the rest of the pack to a screeching halt. Kiedrowski was the first across as soon as Andrews got going again but, while pushing hard to pass for his first possible podium finish this year, he smacked a log and crashed hard, only able to recover as far as fifth place. Lafferty was spent after the brief stop, finally letting Hawkins and McLevy by and having to settle for eighth. Suzuki rider Blair Bersano and Yamaha's Doug Blackwell finished up the top 10. In the new ONCC Pro points system (with no throw-away rides), Watts is in the lead with 110 points, followed by Smith with 90, Lafferty with 62, Steve Hatch with 60, Raines with 56, McLevy with 54, and Kiedrowski with 53. There were 553 riders in attendance at Big Buck, including 61 Youth riders, 238 C and specialty-class riders, and 254 A CN and B riders. He got hung up behind Andrews' bike on the water crossing and had to settle for fifth. (RIght) Multi-time and defending National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty has been consistent in the GNCC series, and that consistency has landed him a strong, if not surprising, third in points.
