Perris Raceway, where Jeff Kelley and the
track crew introduced a new track layout that
promotes safety and wide· open racing that
demands good braking technique.
When the 125cc Novices charged to the
first turn, Jon Murphy grabbed the holeshot,
with Andrew Alcorn and Eric O'Neil following.
Alcorn immediately tried to take the lead, but
Murphy defended his position and held the
lead. Murphy then settled into a good pace to
extend his lead. Meanwhile, O'Neil was closing on Alcorn's rear fender. O'Neil attempted
a pass through the whoops, but Alcorn was
able to hold on to the position. The battle
approached the S-turns, where O'Neil was
able to sneak an inside line to take over sec-
ond. Trying to recover from a bad start,
Charette made his way up to fourth and was
closing on the leaders. As laps wore down,
Murphy began to feel pressure from a charging O'Neil. As the checkered lIag waved, Murphy took the win, with O'Neil a close second
and Alcorn rounding out the top three.
The gate dropped for the second moto and
Alcorn grabbed the holeshot, followed by
Charette and Murphy. Alcorn, a new graduate
from the 80cc ranks, has felt right at home
aboard the bigger bike. He tried to settle into a
comfortable lead, but Charette started to put

some pressure on him. Charette got a good
drive out of a right-handed comer to make a
pass on Alcorn for the lead. Meanwhile, Murphy, in third, was battling with O'Neil, which
resulted in both riders crashing. Murphy and
O'Neil were both okay, but neither would finish the race. Due to the crash, Zackerey
Saathoff inherited the third position and
Robert Golden moved up to fourth. By this
time, the leader, Charette, had settled into a
fast pace and extended his lead. When the
dust cleared and the checkered flag waved,
Charette took the win, followed by a consistent Alcorn in second and Saathoff in third.
