the last lap. Jimmie Ganis finished fourth, with Matt l:ellez coming across fifth. Gelabert again nailed the start in moto two. Ganis, Dominic Hernandez, Casey Franks and Bruder were all very close behind. Hernandez couldn't match the pace of the leaders and fell out of the top five by the second lap. Franks, a new rider at Ocotillo, was hanging close behind Ganis and Gelabert, keeping the racing tight and exciting, with Bruder on his tail. Michael Russell, who was gammg positions after a midpack start, found another rider in his line after committing to the huge double coming out of the Gravity Cavity and was sent cartwheeling fender over fender for at least 50 yards. Ironically, earlier in the day, Russell had asked how to get his picture taken; the reply had been, "Either crash or win." Russell was one of seven riders who didn't fmish the race. Matt Tellez was on a quest, moving forward from deep in the pack to assume 10th place by lap two and sixth place by lap four. Meanwhile, Ganis maintained the pressure on Gelabert and was rewarded when a last-lap pass gave him the lead and the checkers. Gelabert came across second for first overall, Franks hung on for third, Bruder was fourth, and Tellez came across fifth. The 250cc Pro class was a very intense race. In the first moto, Temecula, California's Tyson Taylor took the holeshot, with Jason Matthews, Kent Durkee, John King, Bryan Allen and the rest of the pack right behind. Matthews washed out in a tight turn, letting the lead pack go by during the first lap. On lap two, Durkee crashed out of contention, giving second place to King, third to Allen and fourth to Nick Beaver. The racing was very tight, with the top four nose to tail. Beaver made a move past Allen during the fourth lap. A mistake through the rhythm section in front of the grandstands several corners later caused Allen to rub plastic with Beaver, resulting in Allen taking over second place and King moving into third. Taylor held a comfortable lead until lap five, when his rear tire went flat, giving the lead to King. During lap six, Allen passed King and moved into the lead. Allen went on to lead the last two laps and claim the victory. King hung tough in front of Beaver and stayed in second. Matthews recovered to finish fourth. Durkee came back to finish fifth. Taylor fixed his flat tire and was up at the gate for the second moto. Again, Taylor took the holeshot. This race was set from the start; the way they came out of the gate was the way that they finished: Taylor placed first, with Matthews second, Beaver third, King fourth and Allen fifth. 1:1I 38 APRIL 25,2001 • cue I _ Ocotillo Raceway: Tyson Taylor (255) takes the second-moto 250cc Pro holeshot in Eloy, Arizona, ahead of Jason Matthews (20) and Nick Beaver (546). lIClItilll llKeway Day, ArizIIIa .....Its: MlIn:II 18, 2Ul ClIllonnIll 50 BEG A: 1. The event produced the third consecutive set of different winners in the series, creating a very tight points battle for the championship title and bonuses provided by Maxima and Motion Pro to the Pro and Amateur winners of the series. Plano Honda's Jacki Hudson of nearby Bastrop, Texas, came to Badlands on a mission, overcoming adversity to score the win in the Pro class. Fellow Texan Amber Drake dominated the Amateur class, while Ohio's Kimberly Kocher entrenched herself firmly in the points lead in the 60cc-l05cc class with her win. B As the gate dropped for the Pro class, MSR/Pro Circuit/Tsubaki/Just Racing/UFO-backed Hudson grabbed the holeshot entering turn one, but she exited too wide, opening a hole underneath for Lake Country Motorsports/Torque Center/Two Fast Racing/Steve Young-All Season Sports/ Bell Helmets-sponsored Kirsten Raemisch to squirt through and steal the holeshot money exiting turn one. Stunned, Hudson screamed back into second, followed by Thor/LCS/ Scott/N Stylet Altex Electronicsbacked Kristi Myers and MPM Racing/WSMX/Maxima/Uni/Motion Probacked Sherri Stephens. Hudson made quick work of Raemisch, as did Myers, with Stephens chasing in fourth. Hudson quickly pulled out a r------------------------------------,~ :z: ~ w iii w o >- '" ~ :z: Q.
