GFI Racing Winter Series South Round 5: Lake Elsinore Motocross Park ELSINORE, CA, MAR. 25 totally new track greeted those on hand for the rain-delayed round five of the GFI Racing/Goat Eyewear/Pro Circuit/Klotz/Fox-sponso red Winter Series South, held at Lake Elsinore Motocross Park. The jury is still out about the somewhat tight supercross layout, but one thing is certain: Yamaha-mounted Billy Laninovich walked away with both the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class wins. When the gate dropped for the one-shot, 20-minute 125cc Pro mota, Laninovich edged out Turbo Reif for the holeshot. Michael Sleeter ran third, ahead of Sean O'Connor, Jake Elkins and Brandon Prochnavy. Reif stayed glued to Laninovich for a couple of laps before tipping over in a comer. Once clear of Reif, Laninovich put a couple of seconds per lap on the field, lapping all the way up to fourth place before taking the win with more than 20 seconds to spare. "I got the holeshot and Turbo was on me for a couple of laps," said Laninovich. "Then I think he bobbled somewhere in a corner and I got a little lead and then just started pulling away. The track wasn't the best; it was too tight and too small for a big race like this.' Reif quickly recovered to finish second, a safe distance ahead of O'Connor. "I got a good start and was right behind Laninovich and went into a rut and lost the front end: explained Reif after the race. "I got up and charged hard and still got second, but I wish I could have won.' Sleeter and Tracy Johnson fought over fourth until Johnson went down. Sleeter finished in the position, ahead of Prochnavy, Elkins and Johnson. Ty Kady timed the drop of the gate perfectly for the holeshot in the 20minute, one-shot 250cc Pro race, with YZ426F -mounted Tim Beatty and Laninovich close behind. Beatty stalled his thumper and quickly went from second to last before getting restarted. Reif overcame a midpack start to slip past Laninovich for second place by lap three. Laninovich passed Reif for the lead, only to go down and have to do it all over again. Laninovich repassed Reif for good on lap 13 of what would be a 16-lap mota. Laninovich easily took the win after Reif got sideways off a small jump and crashed with just a little over a lap remaining. Reif quickly remounted to collect second, ahead of Kady, Todd Mitchell and Erik Hughes. 48 APRIL18,2001' cue I. CAbove) Tim Beatty (16), Turbo Reif (3), Michael Sleeter (238) and Billy Lanlnovich (32) blast off the line at Lake Elsinore Motocross Park, site of round five of the GFI Racing Winter Series South. Laninovich took the 250cc Pro win, over Reif. (Left! Cas Swift was runner-up In the Supermini contest and won the 80cc Open Expert class in Elsinore, Califomla. Steven Haughelstine took the first 125cc Intermediate mota win by a bike length over Jesse Casillas, who climbed his way toward the front after a midpack start. Jeff Eide fmished a close third, over Donnie Gritton and Adam Miller. Corey Macomber salvaged a respectable sixth in the talent-laden field after losing the rear brakes on his new YZ250F. Macomber proved he could go much faster with his rear brakes in working order by leading every lap of the second mota. Casillas got a much better start and hounded Macomber all the way to the checkers to go 2-2 for the overall. Haughelstine (1-3) was third, followed by Macomber (6-1) and Eide (3-4). Haughelstine snared the first 250cc Intermediate mota holeshot and led up until the last lap, when Gritton nabbed him for the win. Macomber put a last-lap pass on Eide for third, while Mickey Griffin climbed his way up into fifth by the finish. n • _ S Griffin led the charge for a few laps in round two before Haughelstine and Gritton dropped him to third. Haughelstine kept Gritton at bay for the duration to claim the overall. Griffin (5-3) edged out Eide (4-4) for third overall. Cale Wallace and Cas Swift split mota wins in the Supermini class, with Wallace earning the tie-breaking second-mota win. James Turner (4-3) was third, followed by Adrian Fuller (5-4) and Kevin Frisbie (6-5). (Below) Scott Noble flew to the 60cc Novice and Open-ciass wins. Swift and Wallace returned to do battle in the 80cc Open Expert class. Swift prevailed this time out with a 21 score over Wallace. Garrett Taylor came from out of the pack to walk off with the first 125cc Beginner mota win. A crash midway through the second mota looked like it might ruin Taylor's chances of a sweep of the class, but he pulled off the winning pass with scant turns left in the race to do it. Mike Brewer led almost all of the second mota to go 4-2 for second overall. Chris Callas went 5-3 to top the 3-5 of Jimmy Anderson for third. Kawasaki-mounted Garrick Noble was untouchable in the 60cc Beginner class, going 1-1 for the win. Travis Baker was runner-up both times out, followed by Cody Jeffries and Taylor Hiner. Dylan Schmoke was perfect in the 50cc (7-8) Stock and 50cc Open classes on his KTM as he posted four straight mota wins. Bryan Briley finished second each time out for a pair of second-place trophies. CIII ...... Bsi....... MotDcnass P8Itl Bsinlln, Califwni.l Results: MardI 25, 2001 [Round 5J 50 (4-6) STK: 1.
