CCS Southwest Sprint series Round Z: Firebird Raceway East Palmer Handles Firebird Bv MICHAEL Ross CHANDLER, AZ, MAR. 10-11 Ory Palmer used his Suzuki GSXR750 to take on all comers during round two of the CCS Southwest Sprint Series, held at the Firebird East track in Chandler, Arizona. Not only did Palmer absolutely dominate the weekend by winning every race he entered, including the prestigious Unlimited GP race, he set a new track record for the Firebird East track as well. The man from Mesa, Arizona, now owns the track records at Firebird East and West, and said during a trackside interview on Sunday that he intends to go after Mark Ledesma's record at the big track next. Although it was cloudy and the skies threatened rain, it held Dff long enough for 14 riders to answer the call to pre-grid for the Unlimited GP R 54 APRIL 11. 2001 • cue I • possible for a well-ridden middleweight to be on equal footing with a high-horsepower, Open-class bike. Chad Rolland, Robb Martin and Don Blattert all decided to test that theory by entering their 600s. When the green flag dropped, Palmer led the field into turn one, followed by Rolland, Beckman, Blattert and Martin. As riders jockeyed for position, Martin tried to stuff his way underneath Blattert in turn three, but Blattert slammed the door and refused to let Martin through. Up front, Palmer was trying to make a break for it as the field strung out behind him. On lap two, Palmer clocked a 1:01.71 lap. Unfortunately for Palmer, Rolland and Beckman were staying right with him. These three began to pull away from Ammann in fourth, while Martin got past Blattert in fifth. GSX-R750 rider Joseph Dawson was on the move as well, and he put his Suzuki into seventh, behind Blattert. Suddenly, Rolland came by the start/finish line in first place. Palmer ran off the track at the lakeside turn and Rolland was right there to capitalize on his mistake. Palmer got back on the track and quickly put Rolland behind him again. At the halfway point, Palmer put his head down again and broke away from the pursuing trio while clocking another record-breaking 1:01. 7 lap. When Palmer took the checkered flag, he had a four-second lead over Rolland, who outpaced Beckman by three seconds. Ammann brought his Yamaha home in fourth. Martin rounded out the top five. "J guess I got a little overconfident and tried to get through turn five without braking," Palmer said about his off-track excursion. Rolland was ecstatic about his win. "I never thought I had a chance to get here," he said. "I was really get· ting deep into turn three. I thought I saw my dead grandmother once, and she was telling me to brake." "I wouldn't be here without A.J.," explained third-placed Beckman at the postrace interview. "He was fixing my bike all moming. I want to publicly apologize to Jim for crashing into him this moming. And I want to thank everybody for coming out to watch." Although it was a moment of great triumph for Roland, fate stole it all away a few minutes later. Rolland crashed out of the Heavyweight Supersport race on the fourth lap while trying to run down Palmer. He looked up momentarily to check his pit board and got off-line. He tried to go around the outside of Amateur Tim Baril and snapped the brake lever off of Baril's CBR900RR as they tangled bars. According to Baril, Rolland then went into a tank-slapper and crashed heavily. The race was red· flagged and Rolland was airevacuated to a local hospital because he was unconscious when paramedics arrived on the scene. eN F1re11inlllKewny Eat Cllaller, Arimu Raub: Mln:ll1 D-11, 21D1 1....m1 21 (IfL S/SPT EX; I. Lenny Beckman was anxious to repeat his win from the last race but crashed during the first practice session when he tangled with his teammate Jim Davis and damaged his steering damper and also destroyed the windscreen on his R1. Beckman's tuner, A.J. Ammann, could not find a replacement in time for the start, so Beckman raced with· out either. Surprisingly, Ammann was also suited up and ready to ride. Although he announced at the last race that he would sell his 150-hp R1, the urge to race was too much for him to resist and he planned to do a little blocking to help Beckman win, if necessary.
