Log Road MX Reed Rallies at the Road By BART NEWMAN BRONSON, MI, MAR. 10 David Reed powered his Pro Source Suzuki to an exciting win in a close battle with team· mate Brent Miller in a two-moto duel for the 125cc Junior-class overall at Log Road MX. A group of 15 125cc Junior riders were looking at the Reed's rear fender. Miller, Cody Chmielewski, Nate Woodward and John Penrod filled out the top five spots off the line. On lap two, Miller jumped into first by clearing the 70-foot quad jump. Woodward and Penrod both used that very same move to move past Chmielewski while battling over third place. Miller used the quad jump to hold his lead over Reed, who wasn't jumping it but was still able to keep Miller close with outstanding cor· ner speed. Miller crossed the finish line first, followed by Reed. Woodward and Penrod finished third and fourth. respectively. Kyle Brown used a great inside line on Chmielewski to take fifth at moto's end. The start of moto two was all Miller's after Brown got sideways in turn one, causing a first-turn pileup. That was all the help Miller needed, as he instantly had a lO-bike-length lead on the field. Reed was in control of second and was now hurtling over the quad jump that had been his downfall in moto one. Woodward and Penrod renewed their battle from moto one, each wanting to control thjrd, while Chmielewski and Brown fought over fifth. Miller's lead disappeared on lap three when he lost his rear wheel in a tight righthander. This mishap put Reed out front for good, giving him the 125cc Junior overall. Miller picked up and re-fired his RM just as Woodward went by, but Miller couldn't close the gap on Woodward before the end of the moto. Miller (1-3) beat out Woodward (3-2) for second overall, while Penrod (4-4) rode a good race but couldn't capitalize on Miller's bobble and had to settle for fourth overall. Chmielewski (7-5) beat out Brown (6-6) for fifth overall. On Log Road's 50cc_ Auto track, Taylor Davis grabbed the holeshot in the 50cc Auto (7-8) contest, with Tyler Frese, Taylor Morris and Jacob McCaner were just a blink off the pace. Dougie Moline moved into fourth after McCaner suffered a mechanical failure. Davis was long gone after one lap, making the real race the one for second. Frese dogged Morris from the start. Moline closed the gap on Morris 56 APRIL 4,2001 • cue I e Log Road MX: Brandon Reed (80), David Reed (232) and Brett Miller (333) vie lor the 125cc Junior holeshot in Bronson, Michigan. and Frese and made a great pass on Frese to grab third on lap five. Davis took the win; Mor· ris was second, pressured by Moline in third. Frese was just off the pace in fourth, while the brothers Kovach dueled all mota long over fifth, with Matt beating out Eric at the end. McCaner took the mota-two holeshot, but Davis quickly took the point and opened up an insurmountable lead. McCaner held second throughout. Moline, Frese and Morris swapped positions throughout the moto. Davis took the moto win and the gold. McCraner was next, while Morris, Moline and Frese rounded out the top five. Willie Kennedy overcame overshooting the first tum and a last-place start to finish fourth, ahead of Steve Williams, Mark Moscrop and Harold Smith. Gambetta got a much better start in round two and run away and hid. Delarge and Guarjardo went at it over the runner·up position, with Delarge prevailing in the end. Gambetta would return to take home the first-place money in the Old-Timers Master A class after sweeping both motos. Guarjardo was second both times out, followed by Delarge and Jim Diyorio. PALMDALE, CA, MAR. 11 A strong second·moto performance on the part of YZ250-mounted Richard West helped him come out on top of a three-way points tie to top the 250cc Beginner class during California Racing Club's Sunday motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Brandon realized on his way to the starting line that his clutch was slipping badly and as a result he was last through the first turn. Young crashed his way back to seventh place, giving West a comfortable 10-second advantage over Gordon, who had his hands full with Troy Tittlemier and Peacock. The mota and the overall belonged to West, as he increased his lead to over 20 seconds by the time the checkers fell. Brandon put on a fantastic charge, slipping clutch and all, to make it all the way up into second place to go 2-2 and edge out Young (1-3) for second overall. Taylor (54) and Peacock (4-5) rounded out the top five. Ed Guajardo led the Senior Expert class up until the final lap, when Mark Gambetta got him at the base of the over-and-under Los Angeles County Raceway: Richard West was the 250cc section to take the win.
