Amago Makes Two for Jones _mIlEmJ~ By ROD GIRARD PALOMAR, CA, MAR. 4 Coming off a victory at the Streets of Willow Springs. Jeff Jones made it two on the season with an Amateur Stock-class win at Amaga under threatening skies, as the fearless gathered for the California Motorcycle Road Racing Association's March event on the always-slippery Amago Kart Track. In race one, Jones was quick off the line, leaving Blair Sullenger, Scott Carrera, Rick Lasch and Jonathan Bullock to battle among themselves. By lap three, Lasch had second nailed down, and Sullenger and Bullock were dicing for third. Jones remained unchallenged to the finish, with Lasch a solid second. Sullenger slipped back on the white-fiag lap as Bullock took third and Carrera stepped up for fourth. The afternoon race found Jones again in the lead, but he was unable to break away from Lasch in second. Carrera stepped it up to hold down third, while Sullenger moved up into fourth. The overall standings followed suit, with the exception of Bullock, who took fourth overall. With "Street Fighting Man" being the theme for the Expert 80cc GP race, it was a slugfest. Steve Shimabuku took the point, with Michael Chou moving into second as Skye Girard, Ben Morse and Jon Schendel did battle. Girard clipped Morse's front tire going into turn one, but Morse miraculously saved it. Morse came back with a vengeance, and he and Girard traded paint in nearly every comer thereafter. Dueling to the end, Girard and Morse gave third to Schendel. At the flag, Shimabuku took first, with Chou second, followed by Schendel. Girard won the battle for fourth. In the afternoon, Shimabuku and Girard were quick off the line as three riders tangled and two went down. Shimabuku slid out in turn five, taking Girard with him. Chou took the lead, with Ian Igercic following in second. Shimabuku and Girard recovered quickly and by race's end were able to take third and fourth. The final results gave Chou the overall, followed by Shimabuku, 1gercic and Girard. Mike Day seized the day and the lead in the Amateur Formula 50 race, while Jim Takamoto, Josh Alverson, Bullock and Sullenger jostled for position behind him. It looked like Takamoto had second sewn up when his bike failed in the closing laps, turning second over to Bullock. Sullenger came forward to third, with Alverson taking fourth, while Day rode to hjs first win of the season. In race two, Damian Saavedra, who was Hurry! Pre-Entry ends April 15, 2001.
