At the beginning of the day, it was decided that one six-lap moto would be used to determine the overalls, with the A-class riders being paid twice for their finishes. At the end, many riders felt that another moto wouldn't have been bad, as the track had come around, but there were just as many who felt that one moto was enough. eN Devils Ridge SufanJ, Narth Carelills Results: Ibn:b 4, 2081 llJound 21 Devils Ridge: Mark Wagner dominated the 125cc Pro class and was runner-up in the 250CC Pro class at round two of the U.S. Eastern Motocross Spring Series In Sanford, North Carolina. U.S. Eastern Motocross Spring Series Round 2: Devils Ridge Wagner, Overcash Split Round T1NO By DAVID ELLER SANFORD,NC,MAR.4 ust was not a problem at round two of the u.s. Eastern MX Spring Series at Devils Ridge in Sanford, North Carolina. Practice on Saturday was dry and fast as riders from six states began to assemble. Overnight rains, though, turned a well-prepped track into a moist mess. However, with no more rain on Sunday, the track became very raceable. A guaranteed purse of $3000 made for a strong showing in the Pro classes. Nine 125cc and 11 250cc riders raced for the lion's share of the money. Factory contingency posted by Honda, Yamaha and Husky was also up for grabs. In 125cc Pro action, Yamaha Lumberton/Si-Tech/FMF/Tag/Thor-sponsored Mark Wagner absconded with the holeshot, followed by Jason Bryant, Chris Day, Adam Overcash and Dennis West. Wagner had an eight-second lead the first lap, proving he can ride the mud as well as he can the sand, which he's most famous for. By lap three, the trio of Bryant, Day and Overcash were fighting it out, while Jason Baldwin moved past West and started closing. By the end of lap four, Wagner was catching the B riders who had been stagger-started behind them, Overcash had made his move to pass Bryant, as Day had gone down. Wagner was now leading by 12 seconds over Overcash, followed by Bryant, Baldwin and West. The order remained unchanged to the end. D 42 APRIL 4, 2001 • c u e I e In the 250cc Pro class, Performance Honda/Maxima/Airbrush/ Smith/Hotshots Graphics' Adam Overcash gated the quickest. He was followed closely by Wagner, and the two quickly began to distance themselves from the rest. Wagner tried to get under Overcash on a fast sweeper and was high-sided hard off the bike, remounting in ninth. Overcash now enjoyed a 10-second lead over second-placed Brandon Langdon. Baldwin was beginning to put pressure on Langdon, and Langdon eventually fell on lap four. This left the order Overcash, Baldwin, a fast-closing Wagner, Bryant and Scott Shipley. Wagner had to pull his goggles off, which gave Baldwin a little more breathing room. Then Baldwin crashed hard. After Baldwin's mistake, everything settled down, and Overcash took the win, followed by Wagner, Bryant, Day and Shipley. Counting track cash and contingency, Wagner was overheard saying that his first-lap crash cost him $310; it was still a good ride. There were only three double-class winners. Jeff Burgess scored wins in both the 50cc Shaft and 50cc (4-6) class; he was followed closely by Hunter Wescott in both classes. Shipley raced to wins in the Over 30 A class, followed by Lonnie Taylor and Doug Chappell, and in the Over 35 class, ahead of Vann Gibson and Kenneth Putt. The 125cc Band 250cc B contests were easily won by Blake Hovis of Charlotte, North Carolina. n e _ s 50 SHAFT: 1. Jeff Burgess (Yam); 2. Hunter Wescott (Yam); 3. Seth Swoope (Yam); 4.
