STORY AND PHOTOS BY DON SCHNEIDER PEORIA, AZ, MAR. 11 immy LaMastus used raw horsepower and deft mastery to capture the first-ever overall victory of his career during round two of the AMA/Yamaha Motor Cqrporation Western Four-Stroke Nationals, which is sponsored by Maxima Racing Oils, Spy Eyes, Power-Start Systems, Jak-Bakz if Plates 4 Your Body, Big Gun Exhaust and Gettin' It Extreme Sportswear, with rider support from Factory R&D and White Brothers. LaMastus actually led 31 of 32 laps on the day. laMastus' perfect 1-1 tally aboard the KTM Canadabacked machine provided the manufacturer with its first overall of the season. (KTM only won two overalls in 2000 when Keith R. Johnson won rounds 10 and 12 in Lakewood and Milliken, Colorado, respectively.) Husaberg USA's Ryan Terlecki and team manager Chuck Sun were quite excited to have bettered their roundone overall score with a 2-4 tally. Terlecki, who started in eighth and ninth, respectively, in motos one and two, kept charging hard all day. "His strength and fortitude surely helped him capture second overall," said Mr. Sun. J '=' 36 APRIL 4, 2001 • cue • • Taking his first-ever National podium finish in third overall with a 4-3 tally was Fichtelman Racing/Moto Pro/Applied Racing's Tim Beatty, who started in 10th and seventh, respectively, in motos one and two aboard a Yamaha YZ426F. Colorado Motorsports-sponsored Josh Kellogg, in his first appearance since his knee surgery this past winter, came back strong with fourth overall. Kellogg started in seventh in moto one but worked up to third by lap 13, passing Tim Sharp, Ty Carson, Craig Davis, Brian Sweany and Spud Walters. However, in moto two, after a third-place start, Kellogg succumbed to a determined group of riders - Walters, Beatty, Nathan Woods, Terlecki and Kip Sandell and ended up in seventh. With a consistent 6-6 tally, Pro Vans/Vickery Motorsports/Enzo Suspension-backed Sandell finished fifth overall for the second time in two rounds. Sandell started in seventh in moto one and battled with Beatty, Woods, Terlecki and Carson, all of whom were within 20 feet of one another. In moto two, Sandell got off the gate quickly in fourth, with Kellogg in tow. The duo diced back and forth before Beatty, Walters and Terlecki managed to struggle past. Yamaha Powerhouse-sponsored Woods finished a well-earned sixth on the day despite two crashes. Coming (Below) Craig Davis (4) absconded wfth the holeshot In both motos. In mota one, LaMastus (II), Ty Carson (288), Carter Gumee (201), Brian Sweany (32), Tim Sharp (17) and the rest give chase. from 22nd in moto one, he plowed through the pack to a well-earned eighth. In moto two, Woods took over the lead in the second tum. Incredibly, Davis, who pulled both holeshots, stalled it afterward. laMastus passed Woods to take over the point position on lap two. On lap five, Woods washed out in a turn, falling back to 10th. He fought hard to finish fifth by moto's end. CIII c.n,.n Off·1IoatI .....
