This time, it was at the 14th annual Old Crow Hare Scrambles. Maxxis/FMF/Maxima-sponsored Brian got the best of his brother, taking the overall win by mere seconds. Held just east of Livermore, California, at Carnegie State Recreation Area, the race marked round three of the Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series. More than 310 riders came out to participate in the day's events, and nearly 150 of them lined up for the start of the A/B race. The wet weather leading up to race day left riders facing a muddy course that wound its way through the steep hills of the area. After making it around the majority of the boggy course, riders had to navigate through a high-speed rocky riverbed that ended each loop. At the start, Team Green's Craig Wesner grabbed the holeshot, with the KTM/Maxxis/Moor & Sons of Santa Cruz-backed Patrick Garrahan right on his rear tire. Wesner's lead did not last long, as Patrick wasted no time getting out front by passing Wesner in the second turn. Wesner then ended up getting taken out by another rider, rejoining the fray near the back of the pack. Brian Garrahan also suffered a slow start. "I got a bad start again," Brian lamented. "I probably got like a fourkick start, and the motocross track was real soupy and muddy. I just had to sit back there and let everyone sort out. Then we got on the trail and 1 just tried to pick my way through." Despite the poor start, Brian was able to make his way around everyone except his brother before the first lap ended. However, before the first lap was over, Patrick and Brian tangled with each other, letting the rest of the field make up some time on them. "I crashed and we got tangled up and everyone caught back up to us," said Patrick. "Then we sort of just pulled away from everyone and had a little battle of our own: A little further back, Wesner had recovered and hooked up with Suzuki rider Rod Kreiss and defending series champion Rob Zimmerman. After .making it through all the slower traffic, the trio picked up the pace. "Finally, once we got around most of the people, me, Robbie and Craig just kind of took off," said the Hayward Suzuki/IMS/RG3 Suspensionbacked Kreiss. "It seemed like we started going pretty good. It was, like, back and forth." By the final laps, Brian Garrahan had established a small lead on his brother Patrick, who was well ahead of the rest of the field. However, as 34 n ~or APRIL 4,2001 • cue I e start. (Bottom right) Rodney Kreiss took third at round three of the series, held at the Camegle State Recreation Area in Livermore, Califomia. Brian came down the final riverbed to the finish, he got a surprise - Patrick went by him. "I was lollygagging in the sand wash," said Brian. "My brother went by me at the very end. I said, 'No way!' and I dropped the hammer on him and got him back through the whoops: At the finish, Brian made it to the checkers first, with Patrick only seconds behind him. The battle for third went down to the finish as well, though it ended with a little less drama. Zimmerman had ridden the final two laps on a flat tire, but he was still managing to hold down the fourth position, behind Kreiss, until his tire gave out and he was forced out of the race. "We battled for a little while and I was still right up there with him, but once I hit water, the tire started spinning on the rim, and I made it about half of the next lap and that was it," said a disappointed Zimmerman. "There was nothing I could do." Kreiss continued on to take third . place, just ahead of Posey Racing/Moose Off Road-backed Wesner, who finished strong, nearly catching up to Kreiss at the end. Coming in behind Wesner was Honda rider Ed McCoy and Yamaha-mounted Eric Ducray. Rounding out the top 10 were Damien Galford on his Kawasaki, Yamaha riders John Mason and Jeffrey Brownlee, and KTM pilot Brian Sperle. The afternoon C Race was cut short due to heavy rain, but Honda rider Lane Mount managed to be the fastest to navigate around the extremely wet course. Thus far, the series has been do~ inated by the Garrahan brothers, who have taken the top two positions at every District 36 race so far this year, including the previous Hollister National Hare Scrambles. With these finishes, Brian now leads the points series, followed by Patrick. Kreiss is currently in third, followed by Wesner, and Ducray. eN Carnegie SbIte Ilet:remOll Ana Livennere, Califllmill RauItr. .rch 4, ZOOI IReund 3J e vv s O/A: 1. Brian Garrahan (KTM)~ 2.
