AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 9: The Chigger Run Allen Pulls Off the Chigger Win By puddles that made it difficult to race for some, but not for P.A. Allen. He finished first overall and took the lead in series ·points. "I love the mud," said Allen. "It's much harder to race in, but I like it because it's easier to pass people, and it's more of a challenge." Allen was in the lead for three of the five laps raced. Off the start, KTM rider Mike Sampson grabbed for the holeshot and led seven AA riders down a straightaway. He rounded the first corner ahead of Lance Smith. Jeff Cregg wedged into third, and Allen DEBBIE ALLEN VAN LEER, TN, FEB. 25 he Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series rescheduled round nine of the AMA/Pirelli Tires/Parts Unlimited/ Moose/White Brothers-sponsored event. The Chigger Run in Van Leer, Tennessee, was delayed by one week because it was too wet to race. It rained for five days, and much of the track was under water. When race day finally came, the 285 riders in attendance still faced a muddy mess. The night before, a thunderstorm left T The Chigger Run: Billy Cooper fought a tight battle with Dustin Gibson at round nine of the AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series in Van Leer, Tennessee, and placed eighth overall and second in the 25OcclOpen A class, behind Gibson. 44 MARCH 28, 2001 • cue I _ n __ s was next. Blair Bersano suffered a dead-last start when he crashed. After navigating a small motocross track, the riders disappeared into the woods. On the first lap, Sampson continued to lead the AA pack, and Allen made his m.ove for second place. Sampson claimed the fastest lap of 21 :37, and Allen was not far behind at 21 :56. During that lap, Allen passed Smith and Cregg on the first half of the seven miles raced. He tried to pass Sampson but was unsuccessful. "I would catch Sampson, and I would mess up, so I'd have to catch up to him again," Allen said. Sampson continued to lead for the first two laps, but later it was Sampson who made mistakes. "I was cruising on my first lap and came in 20 seconds ahead of everybody," Sampson reported. "On my second lap, I went through this little mud hole straight down the middle . with no problem." Then he chose a different technique on the next lap and decided to crisscross the mud hole. He realized too late that it was not a good choice. "I fell right into the mudhole!" he said. "My whole side was soaked_" Allen took advantage and passed Sampson, and they battled for the lead several times. It was a tough race, and the Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/WER/Pro Action of Kentucky/ Moose-backed rider met the challenge well. Allen came through the score tent first the next three laps. Then, about three miles from the finish, his opponent ·changed from Sampson to Cregg. "On the last lap, Cregg tried to pass me, "Allen recounted. "We bumped, and he went down." Allen came in first overall and first in the AA class with a 12-second lead on Team Green's Cregg in second place overall. The Bloomington Power Sports/ Scott/Ben's Performance Center/ Answer-backed Cregg said that he was tire to tire behind Bersano for the first three laps. They were two minutes down from the two leaders in the AA class, but once he got around Bersano, he started getting in a good groove and set his eyes on Sampson. "I caught Sampson near a pond section," Cregg recalled. "It was rerouted to a better area, and 1 took the left while he took the old trail." Cregg passed him and settled for second place overall, while Sampson cl.aimed third overa11 one minute later. F&S Suzuki/No Fear/Sunstar/ EK/KK Motorcycle Supplies-supported Bersano grabbed fourth place overall. "I just basically had a bad day," the Michigan hare scrambles champion said. "I crashed on the start and worked up to third. I started working on P.A. but crashed on the grass track." Three seconds later, the 250cc/Open A winner, Dustin Gibson, claimed fifth place overall. "I tried so hard to catch up to Bersano," said the FMF/Smith/DSP/ SIDI/Bike Pedlar-supported Gibson, who nearly lost his lead to Timmy P'Pool. "Timmy got by me on the last grass track, about half a mile from the finish." Then Gibson passed him and several AA riders to claim fifth place. Senior C rider George Poulos drove a thousand miles from Long Island, New York, and the race was delayed. He decided to stay and race the following week. "Nothing was as grueling as this race towards the end," he said, "but it was all worth it, because I got something to take home - a fourth-place plaque." Super Senior winner Ronnie Hackett felt the same. "It was rough," Hackett said, "but it feels good to be able to finish a race." eN The Chigger Run Vln lA!er, Tennessee Results: FebnJlI'Y 25, 2001 [Round 91 O/A: I. P.A. Allen (Suz); 2.
