Roncada came up short over a long triple jump, bailed hard and was unable to continue. "I didn't have the speed to clear it: Roncada said. "1 caught a rock or something and got kicked sideways. I was sideways in the air. and I decided to get off the bike. I think that was the best choice for me. I landed on my heels on the face of the third jump. Nothing·s broken, but they're bruised pretty bad." Roncada had both ankles and heels wrapped and could barely walk afterward. The Frenchman says he'll sit out next week·s round in Minneapolis but will probably be ready to ride the following week. Ricky Carmichael's sixth win in a row put him in elite company. Only three other riders have won six Supercross races in a row: Bob Hannah. in 1978, Rick Johnson. in 1988. and Jeremy McGrath. in 1996. Carmichael's Daytona win was also the ei9hth of his career. KTM Red Bull"s Grant Langston (right) competed in the 250cc class at Daytona. Lan9ston normally competes in the 125cc Western Regional Supercross Series. but wanted to stay sharp while the series takes a break. Langston bailed hard in his heat race but came back to finish behind Damon Huffman in the first semi. Langston again crashed out of the main event while running ninth. Lewis (Yam); 4. The Honda rider has had a tough year ever since it was discovered shortly before last year's Daytona Supercross thaI he had a brain tumor. Israel was set to ride for Planet Honda last year, but thin9s quickly changed with the bad news. Israel underwent radia· tion treatment every day for two months in Miami and eventually got the okay to 90 racing again. However, while preparing for this year's Supercross Series. Israel broke his ankle when he came up short over a triple jump: then he busted his thumb while competing at the second Anaheim race. Israel was unable to transfer through the prelim. inaries at Daytona but will still follow the rest of the Supercross and outdoor National Series.
