Byron Barbour had qualified 24th, the sixth row, and had to come through the field quickly. Using Michelin rain tires, Barbour sliced through the 47-rider pack off the start and soon found he'd made his way to third. "On the first lap I did a lot of block passes through the infield, and was just late on the brakes but smooth about it," Barbour said. "I saw a lot of people fall. A few times I opted to pick up the pace, but I was in third, second was in front, he wasn't pulling away. So he stayed there." Barbour could see Connell 40 yards ahead at the finish, but had to deal with a late rush from Acree. "Lee Acree had put on a show, come up and tried to take third away. I was just able to get out of the chicane a little faster than him and pulled away for third place," Barbour said. "I did the best I could," Acree said after finishing seven-tenths of a second behind Barbour. "Just tried to keep my nose clean, not fall down. I was watching people bounce off walls. I don't want to be one of them. I like to keep this GSX-R pretty. It's a great bike and I want to keep it that way." M&M Mortgage's Stokes got the better of Chase in their fight for fifth, pulling away on the final lap. Lopez was on the pole and away fast, too fast as it turned out, and he was given the meatball flag signaling a stop-and-go penalty. Not long after he'd pulled into the pits, Palazzo crashed unhurt in turn six and the race was stopped. No amount of effort could clear the track in time, and the racing was over.
