Heat two belonged to Peter Boast from Lincolnshire, England. He led from the tape to the checkers, with Scotland's Scott Courtney taking second, Colorado's Cameron Brooks third and Rod Cooling from Wales finishing last. In heat three, Dean Garrod from Norfolk, England, and Bill Hermant from Sparks, Nevada, made contact and crashed while they were in first and second, respectively. The race was stopped and restarted. This time, Hermant took the lead, with Garrod in hot pursuit. On lap three, Garrod went high, glancing off the wall, and Detroit. Michigan's Greg Starcevic and Brent Densford from Conway, South Carolina, raced by. The race ended in that order. In heat four, Robert Arms from Greenville, South Carolina; Randy DiFrancesco from Bakersfield, California; and Ronny Kemp from Cary, North Carolina, were lined up from the inside out. DiFrancesco led from start to finish. Kemp was second and Arms finished third. In the first heat of round two, Hurley took the lead from the outside starting slot and never gave it up. Starcevic was second, over Cooling and Arms. In the second heat, rookie Mann gated like a bandit and showed his three veteran competitors the way home by leading all the way. DiFrancesco finished close behind in second and Hermant got third, with Brooks trailing. The third heat had Kemp, Densford, Courtney and FaFard lined up from the inside out. Third-year veteran FaFard took an early lead over Courtney, As FaFard checked out, Kemp gave Courtney a run for his money for second place, but Courtney just wouldn't give it up. The finishing order after four quick laps was FaFard, Courtney, Kemp and Densford. The fourth and final heat of the night was contested by Barlow, Garrod and Boast. Barlow knew the only way he could have enough points to transfer directly to the main event was to win this race. He shut the door Los Ancianos MC Tecate Hare Scrambles when he hit a bump and was sent to the ground right in front of the cheering crowd; luckily, the soft. sand saved him from injury, and he remounted and rejoined the race. Within one lap Abbott was already back up to third place. However, later on, KTM's Lafferty jumped into third place, behind Russ Pearson, who kept Lafferty at bay and ended up second overaJl, behind Davis, who got his revenge for running out of gas while dueling with past winner Paul Edmonson and not finishing by winning this year's race. Abbott and Brown placed fourth and fifth, respectively, Ty Downs Tecate By luIS RErtE "ZR" MONTANO AND MJSAEL "!.ALo" FRANCO TECATE, BC, MEXICO, JAN. 21 Team Montclair Yamaha's Ty Davis won the annual Los Ancianos Me Tecate Hare Scrambles, an East Coast GNCC-style cross country race in the hills east of Tecate in Baja California, Mexico, featuring the Acerbis Pro Challenge. For this year's event, the Los Ancianos crew designed a course for a two~hour race for the Sportsman, Industry/Media, Mexican Nationals and Women's divisions, while the Pros, A and B riders were challenged by a three-hour race on a course approximately 12 miles long. Davis, who ran out of luck at last year's event and didn't finish the race, was very familiar with the terrain, and this year he rode his Yamaha YZ250 to the overall win, earning $1100. Also riding a Yamaha, Russell Pearson ended up in second. slight advantage going in, but Barlow refused to let off, coming out of the first corner a wheel ahead, They continued like that for two thrilling laps. On the third lap, Barlow prevailed as he cleared the French Canadian once and for all, not to be challenged again. Meanwhile, behind the leaders, Boast, DiFrancesco and Mann were duelling for the final podium position. After several position changes, Boast fought off the others to win third place, Fourth place went to DiFrancesco, fifth went to Mann, and Courtney finished sixth.
