Texas Winter Racing Series Round 3: Lake Whitney MX Park (Left) Dillon Van Way won all four motos in the 50Cc (7-81 and 50cc Open classes at round three of the Texas Winter Racing Series. Van Way Is just one of three brothers who race; all of them race In the Pee Wee classes. After a three-month hiatus due to mononucleosis, Kerr mounted his Team Green/ Jack Cotton Modifications/ Thor-backed KX80 and picked up where he left off in early November to win both the 80cc (14-15) and Open classes. Bryan Zachary stole the holeshot in the first 80cc (14-15) moto. Kerr was on fire and took the lead from Zachary. John Baker raced in third, followed by Greg Chapman. Jason McCoy and Taylor Smith. Both Kerr and Zachary began to distance themselves from the rest of the class at the top of the second lap, with Zachary barely giving Kerr a chance to take a breath. At the end, however, Zachary got the goods on Kerr in the final section of whoops, squeezing by for the lead, with Kerr finishing a close second. In the second moto, Kerr was at the controls from holeshot to checkers. Baker gated in front of Zachary and followed Kerr through the first lap until Zachary zeroed in on the front section of the course on lap two and passed Baker for the number-two spot. By that time, Kerr had already established a good lead on the pack. Baker kept Zachary within striking distance, but Zachary held second at the finish. behind Kerr, who claimed the victory and the overall win. By KAT SPANN AND THE BECKSTER PHOTOS BY KAT SPANN WHITNEY, TX, FEB. 4 TM-mounted Dillon Van Way of Louisiana took the checkered flag in all four motos of the 50cc (7 -8) and 50cc Open events during round three of the Honda of Houston/FMF Texas Winter Racing Series at Lake Whitney Motocross Park. A banner turnout of 627 riders were treated to perfect motocross weather, which was a delightful change from all the wet stuff that has plagued the state for a month. Van Way was joined in doubleclass wins by minibike pilot Jonathan Kerr, who won the 80cc (14-15) and 80cc Open contests; 125cc/250cc Intermediate rider J.J. Pecsok; and Dean Lane, the Over 25 and Over 30 Expert victor. Van Way took the checkered flag first in both 50cc (7-8) motos, followed by Mark Meiterman and Scott Sean. Tyler Heemsbergen finished fourth in the first moto, with Bryson Powers finishing fourth in moto two to collect the same position overall. Dillon's brother, Logan, rounded out the top five overall with a 7 -5 performance. Van Way retumed in the first 50cc Open moto and led Heemsbergen, Kyle Swanson, Powers and Caleb Dowell to the finish line. Powers took the second-moto holeshot, in front of Van Way, Heemsbergen, Tanner Neujahr and Asher Petry, but Van Way took over the controls to claim his fourth moto win and second class victory of the day. 42 MARCH 7. 2001 • cue I • n • _ so Dean Lane was the fastest Vet rider, winning all four Over 25 and Over 30 Expert motos. Tom Fichter snared the holeshot in the first Over 30 Expert moto, with Lane at his back tire as they emerged out of the tower sweeper. Lane took over the lead and held it for the remainder, followed by D.L. Wood and Greg Howard, both of whom had gotten around Fichter. Chris Craft raced in fourth into the final lap, passing Howard to take third at the checkered flag; Howard and Fichter rounded out the top five in that order. second. Jason Gaddjs was fourth, and Paul Campbell was fifth until Danny Kelsey replaced him on lap two, and they remained in those positions to the checkers. Bailey got the second-moto holeshot. with Aaron Mitchell second and Pecsok in third. Pecsok got by Mjtchell and went after Bailey. and they were side by side going into the creek section of the course. When Bailey slid out in a berm, Pecsok went for the lead. Kelsey got around Mitchell as Bailey remounted in eighth. Scott Hickey battled with Mitchell on lap two and eventually took third, displacing Mitchell to fourth. Bailey moved up two notches to sixth. On the fourth lap, Bailey got around Jason Gaddis for fifth and then used the final lap to pass Mitchell to finish fourth at the finish line. Bailey (2-4) was second overall. lSelsey (5-3) was third and Gaddis (4-6) was fourth. Mitchell (7-7) rounded out the top five. eN lake Whitney MX ...... Lane remained at the helm, with Wood finishing second. followed by Craft. Fichter, Shaun Martin and Howard. The Over 25 Expert contest featured a few of the same players as the Over 30 class. Lane took the checkered flag first in both motos. Craft finished second both times. Third was split between Wood and Martin; however, Martin (4-3) claimed third overall, and Wood (3-7) was fifth. Nick Moomaw (5-4) snaked fourth overall. Chris Marek absconded with the holeshot in the first 250cc Intermediate moto, with David Tarnow at his back tire.
