Toyota Official Truck of Glen Helen Raceway presents "' came here to survive," Everts said. "It's my first race back in a long time, I'm riding a new bike, and [am in] a completely new situation. I told myself if I'm in a position to get on the podium or win, I'll go for it, so it's not so nice to lose a place with the race nearly over." Bervoets crossed the finish line to win ahead of Smets, Everts, Van Doorn, Peter lven, Marko Kovalainen, Peter Nijs, Danny Theybers, Rob Robins and Johansson. "You can't count this for anything," Bervoets said following his win. "It's nice to get a first-up win. The track is so tough on the arms. I got such a good start that' could control the race from around nine seconds. My arms hurt so bad." MOToe Smets quickly moved into the lead ahead of McFarlane and Bervoets. After one lap, Smets held a slight lead over Bervoets, with Everts a distant third. Those positions remained the same for the entire race. The other two big names on the Koersel program - Johansson and McFarlane - were again struggling with the deepsand track, back in 22nd and 25th respectively, and both would retire before the race was completed. For Smets, the extra time on the bike proved a blessing as he moved away from Bervoets to win easily. With his confidence rising, Smets is now ready to defend his 500cc World Championship. "To beat the guys I beat today, I'm happy," Smets said. "Bervoets and Everts are the two best sand racers in the World, so to beat them is very good for my progress after the operation. I will now do another four Internationals before the first GP in Spain, and hopefully my condition will be much better. I still got tired today, and my arms are very sore." A distant third for Everts in moto two did not make for an easy day at the office. "I was really fighting with the bike in the first moto," Everts told. "I decided to just take it easy in the second moto and not do anything stupid. I enjoyed the second race - just let Smets and Bervoets go. I had to tum the speed down; otherwise I would have crashed. It was so dark near the end of the race, I could not see the lines in the forest." eN 55th editie MlltlIcrass 't Fanleinl;je Keenel, Belgium Results: febnulry 11, 2001 MOTO 1: 1.
