The swap meet will also host the AHRMA Concours bike show, and vintage bike clubs can have complimentary space for their gatherings, Two longtime corporate members of the AMA Board of Trustees were reelected, and a new member was added, at the association's annual corporate membership meeting, held February 17 in Indianapolis. Six of the 12 seats on the AMA Board are from the Association's corporate membership, They serve twoyear terms and are elected by the corporate members themselves, according to the AMA. With three seats up for renewal, the corporate members re-elected Ray Blank, American Honda's vice president for sales and operations, and Mel Harris, vice president of American Suzuki's motorcycle division, to the seats they have held since 1989 and 1995, respectively. Also added to the Board was Davey 900mbs, president of Filter Publications, who was elected to fill the seat vacated by Lamar Williams, president of the American Motorcycle Institute, who steps down after 10 years of service to the Board. The next Board meeting is set for March 4-5 in Daytona. With Coast Racing Association (CRA) taking on the task of bUilding a completely new motocross facility at Carlsbad Raceway in Carlsbad, California, the association is holding fundraiser practice sessions to help with getting the job completed. The next session is scheduled for March 3, with practice slated to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a minimum donation of $25 required in order to ride. Triumph showed 011' the 2002 Daytona 955i prototype at Triumph Manhattan, a dealership located only a handful of blocks from the Jacob Javits Convention Center, site of the New York International Motorcycle Show where the new Triumph will be on the display throughout the weekend, The new Triumph is considerably upgraded from the previous model, with gains in power and weight reduction, as well as improved handling. According to Triumph's Michael Vaughn, the new Daytona makes 147 horsepower from its liqUid-cooled, DOHC, in-line, threecylinder powerplant, the gains coming from a redesigned engine and new digital fuel injection, Keihin DFI has replaced the previous Sagem unit. The new model weighs 22 pounds less than the earlier version, down to 413.6 lbs., with gains in a number of places. The tubular aluminum alloy frame hasn't changed, but the fairing has, with larger air scoops added just below the turn signals, a new, brighter headlight set that brings to mind Yamaha's R-l, and a narrower seat, Weight savings in the fairing and a new digital instrument panel have shaved three pounds. The redesigned engine is five pounds lighter. But the greatest savings came from the new dualsided alumJnum swingarm, which is 7.5 pounds lighter than the single-sided version used on the previous Daytona. The new Daytona is shorter than the earlier model, with steeper steering geometry, which, along with a new, smaller aspect 180/55 trackside racer support in the Southwest for six years. Mehl headed the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Worldwide Ra<;.ing Division for over 20 years, and recently retired as Vice PreSident of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Executive Director of the Indy Racing League. Mehl will study the current procedures of rules making used by AMA Pro Racing and report on ways he believes the sanctioning body can improve the process, including allOWing participant input where more dialog can take place before a major rule is altered. -It's important to have someone of Leo Mehl's stature and experience coming on board to help AMA Pro Racing update its rules making procedures," said AMA Pro Racing's CEO Scott Hollingsworth. "Our goal is to create better understanding among everyone involved in AMA Pro Racing as to what our goals are before a change is made. Mehl's knowledge in this area should help us reach our objectives." During Mehl's tenure at Goodyear he was a friend to motorcycle racing, according to the AMA. Goodyear was a leading maker of motorcycle tires through the 1980s. Even after the company changed directions and got out of the motorcycle consumer market, Goodyear continued to manufacture its popular dirt track tires, which are still used today. After retiring from Goodyear, Mehl became the executive director of the Indy Racing League. He oversaw the day-today operations of the IRL during a period of significant growth and innovation, according to the AMA. The WML also announced the dates and locations of the AMA-WML Outdoor Motocross Championship Series. The 2001 series has grown to six rounds and will include women's pro racing during halftime at several rounds of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Series. The men's and women's openers will coincide at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, on May 13, prior to heading to the Hangtown event mentioned above. WML's third round is in Budds Creek, Maryland on June 16, round four is on July 28 in Washougal, Washington, round five is on August 25 in Binghamton, New York, and the finale is on September 2 in Delmont, Pennsylvania. The Women's Motocross League will host the 2001 International Championship in conjunction with the Hangtown Chevy Trucks National MX in Sacramento, on May 20. The second stop of the AMA-WML Outdoor Motocross Championship, Series will have the WML pros race on Sunday during halftime of the men's race.
