New KTM recruit Paul Krause took time out from his busy desert racing schedule to nde the Quicksilver Enduro on a brand new KTM 125EXC. "I've never even started the thing, said Krause about his orange peashooter. - All I have is a wrist watch and an odometer, but I'm ready to ride. I'm planning on going to the Six Days on a 125 this year, so I guess I'd better learn how to ride one.' Mr. Gnarly oViously caught on fast. finishing second in the 200cc A class. which was also good for 17th overall. Husqvama rider Fred Hoess was so pleased with his second-place finish that he spent an extra day in San Francisco to celebrate before head- ing home to New Jersey. The Husqvama rider plans on contesting the entire series this year. While nearly everyone was at Saturday's 6;00 p.m. riders meeting. Yamaha's Randy Hawkins and mechanic Dale Stegall were preparing a new race bike. Apparently. Hawkins was having engine problems with the WR250F that he rode at round one, and at 5;00 p.m .. he finally decided to ride a spare WR250F that was silting in his trailer. Stock parts were swapped for the usual set-up. and by the time the meeting was over. Hawkins and crew were enjoying dinner in the new motorhome. Salinas resident and Kawasaki road racer Doug Chandler traded his racing slicks for a set of knobbies at Coalinga. Chandler rode sweep for the Salinas Ramblers aboard a KDX2oo. At round one in Wickenburg, Arizona. Gas Gas Terry Cunningham acted as team manager, but in Coalinga the four-time National Enduro Champion acted as the top-placing Senior-class rider. Cunningham. who was only required to ride two loops. dropped one point, upsetting local enduro ace Dave Wood for over-40 honors. Coincidentally. Cunningham and Wood opted to ride the third loop in order to be placed in the overall results. They finished an impressive 20th and 28th overall. respectively. cue I • n e _:IS MARCH 7. 2001 37
