CMC Golden State Nationals Round 3: Competition Park (Leftl Ryan Morals (16) passes Chris Wheeler (4) en route to a double-moto win In the 125cc Pro class at round three of the CMC Golden State Nationals at Competition Part< In San Jacinto, California. STORV AND PHOTOS Bv TONV ALESSI SAN JACINTO, CA, FEB. 4 yan Morais was on track today well, most of the time - as he posted a double-moto sweep of the 125cc Pro class during round three of the CMC Golden State Nationals, held at the newly renovated Competition Park. Team Green's Justin Smith led for most of the first 125cc Pro race, while Morais, who was running near the point position, slid off the track and dropped to ninth. "Me and Honda's Turbo Reif were going for the same line, and I got pushed out," Morais said. Morais re-entered the fray, put his head down and cut through the pack like a knife through warm butter, and with three laps to go he was running inside the top four. "I could see the leaders," Morais said. "I got Wheeler when my pit board said 'three laps to go,' then Justin Smith just before the white flag." Morais took control on the final lap and went on to score a hard-earned victory, followed by Smith, Gerrit Ordelman and Wheeler. In the second moto, Smith and Morais were side by side at the start. Morais took over the lead just after the fast sweeper turn. "We were side by side in the sweeper and I passed him there," Morais reported. Morais led for a while but was losing ground to Wheeler. "I think Chris Wheeler was catching me because I wasn't doing the triple in the back," Morais explained. Wheeler did catch Morais, who again went off course. "I was getting pressure from Wheeler," Morais recounted. "Then I cross-rutted R 48 FEBRUARY 28,2001 • C U a • and went off the track and Wheeler got by." Morais got' back on track and reeled Wheeler back in and made a daring last-lap pass over a ski jump to retake the lead. Morais held on for the moto and overall win. Wheeler settled for second. "I am trying to get back on track," said Morais. "I spent most of the last year out with my hip injury, and this year with my thumb and sternum. Now I am just trying to get it back together. It's amazing how fast everyone has gotten. They are all stepping it up." For the second straight week, red rider Tim Weigand posted the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate victories, though he only won one out of the four motos on this day. n e _ s e "I had some bad and good luck today," Weigand said, "but it all worked out for me and my TRE Honda. We won both classes again." Weigand's closest racing came in the 125cc class. "Richie Owens hung real close to me all day in the 125cc class," Weigand said, "but I guess his bike blew up or something." Weigand used a 1-2 showing to top Kyle Mace (5-1) and Clayton Miller (4-5). Weigand returned to win the 250cc Intermediate class, using a 3-2 tally for the overall win, topping Richie Owens (2-3) and Cole Siebler (5-1). Mini racing was as fierce as ever, as the nation's top future talent once again faced off. Jimmy Nelson, on his Thousand Oaks Yamaha, again posted top honors in both the 80cc (14-16) and the Supermini class. Nelson defeated top Mini racers Mike Alessi and Davi Millsaps in what was without a doubt the feature minicycle race of the weekend. Millsaps scored a convincing win in the first moto, while Nelson made a last-lap pass on Alessi for second in moto one. In the second moto, Alessi led up to the white flag and then slid off the course. "Mike was coming into this corner way too fast," Nelson reported. "Then he started to slide, and it looked like he was about to high-side; then he let off the brakes and just flew off the track." Alessi re-entered the track where he left it, losing about six seconds to Nelson, but he was still able to maintain a safe margin over Millsaps, who was riding a solid third in the moto. Alessi returned to score both 80cc (12-13) moto wins without issue, while Justih Mulford, on his Honda of Houston ride, got his first win of the series in the 80cc (7 -11) class.
