CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series Round 6: Exposition Arena (Left) Rebounding from a case of bronchitis, Ryan Huffman huffed and puffed and blew away the competition in the 125cc and 250Cc Pro classes on Friday night, the first of two evenings of arenacross action at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. STORV AND PHOTOS BV CLAV UGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 2-3 Doming back strong after a bout \::Jwith bronchitis that left him hacking and short of breath, Ryan Huffman left the competition winded, as he carded overall wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes during the first of two consecutive nights of racing inside Exposition Arena at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, site of round six of the CMC-sanctioned Northwest Winter Arenacross Series. Riding a Yamaha, Huffman won all four motos entered on Friday night, including two brutally tough 250cc Pro contests, which the rider from Roseburg, Oregon, spent locked bar to bar with arena cross phenom Ryan Leach. In Huffman's absence on Saturday night, Leach walloped the field to net an overall win in the class and keep his quest for the class title alive. Leach, also Yamaha-mounted, scored wins both evenings in the Before The Hill Junior/ Intermediate/ Pro class, nabbing the overall win on Friday night with a 1-2 tally. Jon Kauffman jumped out in front of the field in moto one on Friday night, fol- (RIght) Ryan Leech took advantage of Huffman's absence on Saturday and dominated the 250Cc Pro and Before The Hili Prollntennedlate classes at round six of the CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series. Leach quickly passed Johnson for second. and then spent several laps chasing down Kauffman before taking the win. Honda-mounted Junior rider Ryan Huege pulled the trigger fastest to lead moto two, but Connaghan bumped Huege back to second, ahead of Johnson. Leach started near the end of the pack but moved up to overtake Huege and Johnson, but Connaghan had a good thing going up front and scored the moto win. Regardless, Leach won overall via 1-1 placings, ahead of Connaghan (3-1), Kauffman (2-4) and Justin Jensen (4-3). Huege led Johnson, Blackwell and KTM rider Pete Sannan into the top positions overall in the Junior portion. Undoubtedly, the weekend's best racing came in the 250cc Pro class. Huffman nailed both holeshots. In moto one., Huffman led Eric Rogers, Connaghan, Leach and Kauffman on the opening-lap parade. Leach spent most of the moto forging forward and 46 FEBRUARY 28,2001 • DUD spent a great deal of energy reeling in Huffman. Things got close during the final three laps; Leach put pressure on the surprised Huffman, but Huffman answered each of Leach's challenges and netted the moto win. Moto two was much the same. Huffman jumped out front and remained there to the finish, though this time Leach improved his position much faster, moving up on Huffman's rear fender by lap four. From that point on, the duo waged a wheel-towheel battle, which went in Huffman's favor at the finish. Leach (2-2) carded second overall, ahead of Connaghan (3-3). Kauffman scored the Intermediate-class win, ahead of Rogers and Joe Brockway. Huffman bolted for Washington on Saturday, greatly aiding Leach in his Saturday night win in the class. Herb's Cycletown/ Axo/Gran Prixbacked Leach hammered the competition in both motos, leaving Connaghan and Suzuki rider J.R. Vielle to squabble over second. Connaghan •• n e _ so beat fellow rookie Pro Vielle to the finish in both motos for that position. KTM rider Gared Steinke and Jared Wood have been the cream of the crop in the 60cc class this season, but Wood recently suffered an injury, and a pair of Kawasaki jockeys: brothers Travis and Tyler McClinton - moved up into the top three in Wood's absence. Tyler netted the only nonSteinke win in the 60cc classes this weekend by topping Saturday's 60cc Open class, ahead of Travis and newcomer Glenn Prestholt Jr. Steinke was victorious in the 60cc Senior and 60cc Open classes on Friday night, although he had to come from behind in nearly every moto. The McClinton brothers snagged holeshots in all four motos, but Steinke took the point positions and carded a four-for-four moto-win tally, with Travis and Tyler each garnering a runner-up finish to the rider from Salem. Prestholt emerged a winner in the 50cc Husqvarna Challenge race on Saturday night, both overall and in the series, thanks to double series points. David Paschke, who held the class points lead coming into the event, finished second, ahead of Andy DiBrino, Nash Blaylock and Justin Spink. Prestholt enjoys an eight-point lead over Paschke in the class, in which the series winner will receive a 2001 50cc Husqvama. Shannon Crouch and Rochelle Neimann split overall wins in the competitive Women's class on both nights. Crouch and Jeanne Van Buskirk went head to head for the overall win in the second moto on Friday night, with Crouch using a controversial pass to net a win and the overall ahead of Van Buskirk (22) and Kawasaki rider Amy Light (33). On Saturday, Neimann netted the win ahead of Crouch and Van Buskirk, tightening the points lead, 480-433 in Van Buskirk's favor. Other impressive double or triple winners included Pee Wee and 50cc Open victor DiBrino, 80cc (9-11) and Supermini champ Nick Randklev, and Ken Romero, who won the FourStroke and Over 30 Intermediate classes.
