National Arenacross Series Round 1 1 : Cellular One ij!l;r-ena "I can't believe it; I am truly Godblessed," Antunez said from the podium following his 100th victory. "I remember my first-ever win at Albany, New York, in '96. It seems like just yesterday. "As I just told my teammate Jeff Gibson, each win still feels like it's the first one," Antunez said later that evening from his team's pits. "It doesn't get any sweeter than winning. Whether it's number 100, or number one, it still feels good to win any." Meanwhile, St. Louis Powersports/Thor/Pro Circuit/Kawasakimounted Pedro Gonzales was also on top of his game at Milwaukee, where it was cold and snowy outside the arena. The rider from Monterrey, Mexico, went 4-1-3-2 over the course of the weekend and also scored a Dash-for-Cash win on Friday. "Speedy" is looking to improve on his current sixth place in the series, and his good rides as of late have him now in fourth in the points with six rounds left to go. "I need to keep getting good starts and strong finishes," Gonzales said. "I need to make up some points and keep moving up in the standings, too." Carrollton Kawasaki/Team Safety.com's Josh Demuth was also a front-runner. The Texan went 3-3-2-9 throughout the two-day event and is steadily moving back up through the ranks after dropping many positions earlier in the year when he was out with a wrist injury. Thor/Honda/Tuf Racing's Rusty Holland also made some noise. HoIland was a little inconsistent going 614-5-1, but his 250cc and Dash-ForCash wins on Saturday made up for it. When Holland is on, he goes good. Look for him to really get in the mix when the series heads west in the next several weeks. Because, it was on this night that Antunez scored his 100th Arenacross win and became the first rider ever to do so when he took the checkered flag in first place following Friday night's opening race - the 125cc final. Yes, the 100th win of Antunez's career is no doubt a milestone for him and the sport, but, in reality, the win is perhaps more important in that it brings with it more points toward a likely fifth consecutive Arenacross Championship for the Californian. Coupled with second-, third-, and fourth-place finishes at Milwaukee, Antunez moves another step toward that unprecedented fifth title. 30 FEBRUARY 28,2001 • cue (Above) Buddy Antunez recorded his 100th career NatIonal Arenacross win In Friday's 125cc main In Milwaukee.
