"I loved it! I got the holeshot, and I got out front and started pulling a pretty good lead. It felt great." Although the 10 miles were rough, Cregg got better and better. During his second lap, Cregg claimed the fastest lap of 31:47, and on the last lap, he beat his own time by three seconds. "I ran a smooth race," he said, "and 1 got a good pace on my KX250." Second place overall went to AA rider Mike Sampson, who acquired the lead for AA series points_ At this race, he confronted and overcame a number of setbacks. His first setback caused him to be the last man off the start, but he quickly caught Cregg on the first lap. Once he did, he fell. "The trail was rough because there were so many rocks and logs, and you couldn't see them under the leaves," he explained. "The logs were wet and slick, so I kept falling. I'd get up and fall again." Sampson was in second place for most of the race, and he denied 1M S/ Re n th a I / Moose/Tw i nA i r / Alpinestars-supported Mike McCrea any chance at having a comfortable ride when he was in second place. DEBBIE ALLEN NEW JOHNSONVILLE, TN, FEB. 4 ound eight of the Pirelli Tires/Moose/Parts Unlimited/ White Brothers Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scramble Series had 385 riders in attendance at the Box Hollow track, located in New Johnsonville, Tennessee. People traveled from California, Iowa, Missouri, Vermont, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee to compete on the 10-mile course for two hours, and no one conquered the trail as well as Jeff Cregg. He grabbed for the holeshot, took a two-minute lead and never looked back. Once the green flag waved, Bloomington Power Sports/Scotti Ben's Performance Center/Answerbacked Cregg jumped out front and then stayed in the lead for the entire race. Off the start, Cregg led the remaining 10 AA riders around a 180-degree curve and into a long creek section. They battled cautiously for 33 minutes during their first lap because it was tough and slick and no one knew what lurked under the wet leaves. Many felt the track. was dangerous, but not Cregg. ,. My hands had raw blisters on them." On the last lap, Sampson was two minutes behind Cregg when he pulled into the score tent. McCrea managed to get by Sampson a few times during the race, but he would falter. "It seemed that every time I would get in front of him (Sampson). I would go down," McCrea said. "One time I got off the trail trying to pass Boll Hollow: Jeff Cregg grabbed the holeshot and never' him, and I hit a log looked back on his way to the overall win at round eight of the Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scramble Series in New and went down."
