GFI Racing North Winter Series Round 2: Oatfield Raceway llatfield IlKeIAY Turtocll. c.lif8mia Results: Juury 21, 2001 UlHnd 2J Pee Wee Track 50 FIT: 1. Nick Pette (Pol); 2. Alex Alvarez By JIM AND VALERIE ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS TURLOCK,CA,JAN.21 IU'hen Tallon Vohland and . . , his Chevy Trucks/Pro Circuit Kawasaki lined up for the first 125cc Pro moto, the rest of the field knew they were prey, as few can match the sheer animal instincts of the seasoned veteran once the gate drops. As expected, Vohland didn't disappoint; he chewed up the Oatfield Raceway soil en route to a four-moto sweep of both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at round two of the GFI Racing North Winter Series. Pro class. The Forest Ranch resident utilized back-to-back good starts. Randy Norman claimed the third spot in the 250cc Pro class. After pulling a holeshot in the second moto, the mild-mannered rookie Pro went on to post a well-earned 3-4 score on the day. A good ride was also put in by the elder statesman of the field, Ray Crumb. In fact, in the second 250cc Pro moto, Crumb ran up in the second spot early on and finished out the moto in fourth. While many may have thought Vohland, at 28 years old, was the "old man" on the gate, Crumb, at (RIght) Jimmy Stewart (92) ftew his Yamaha to both 250Cc Intermediate wins at the second round of the GFI Racing North Winter Series. (Left) At Oatfleld Raceway, Kawasaki Jockey Tallon Vohland (22) clawed his way to the 125cc and 250Cc Pro wins. (Below) Hondamounted Brae Owens (2) topped the 125cc Novices In Turtock, Callfomia. However, things got off to a shaky start for Vohland. His 125cc bogged off the line in moto one, and Jeff Northrop grabbed the holeshot and opened up a huge lead early on. "My bike wasn't cleaned out well, and with it being so cold, it just bogged big time off the gate," Vohland reported. "I was dead last going into the first turn, and I knew Jeff goes fast on this track, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. But the track was perfect - just rough enough to slow the faster guys down a little and I'm so used to the rough stuff from all the years racing overseas, I think it gave me an advantage. Jeff was riding great, though, and gave me a good workout today." Indeed, Northrop was riding well. He took all four runner-up spots on the day and led both 125cc Pro motos well past the halfway point until succumbing to Vohland's relentless pursuit. "Yeah, I thought I had that first moto," Northrop said, "but Tallon was riding good, and once he passed me, I just had to settle in for second. I felt good today and got good starts in all my motos, so I can't ask for much more than that." Evan Laughridge posted a solid 33 score for third overall in the 125cc 40 FEBRUARY 14, 2001 • 29, had him beat by a year, and he put together an impressive 4-5 showing for fourth on the day. A huge contingent of nearly 500 riders braved the chilly conditions, and good racing took place in all classes. Jimmy Stewart and Chris "Tornado" Loredo bested the Intermediate ranks, with Stewart taking care of business via a 1-1 score in the 250cc class while Loredo did the job with a 2-1 tally in the 125cc class. While Stewart pretty much dominated both motos with consistently good starts in each, Loredo had to dig down deep in his first moto after a sixth-place start. With his Yamaha of Modesto teammate Matt McCrummen n e _ s cue •• dominating moto one with a solid win, Loredo got out front early in moto two and took a wire-to-wire victory that sealed the overall. In Novice action, Honda-mounted Broc Owens took the overall win in the 125cc class. A recent transplant from the 80cc class, Owens has obviously adapted well to the big bike. Shawn Trantham dominated the 250cc class with a 1- 1 score after surviving good battles in both motos with runner-up John Wear. In the always-exciting Beginner classes, Michael Jennings took the honors in the 125cc class, despite going winless in both motos. After escaping a huge first-turn pileup in moto one, Jennings motored on to a second-place finish and duplicated that feat in moto two for the win. Joe Hurlburt has less trouble in the 250cc class, taking solid wins in each for the overall. Charlie Morrison topped both the Supermini and 80cc Expert classes in dominating fashion, while Jordan Mockridge chose all the right lines en route to a clean sweep of the Intermediate class. The Freeman brothers, Brandon and Tyler, swapped scores in the Novice ranks, and it was older brother Brandon who took the allimportant second-moto win to post a 3-1 score on the day for the overall. With 38 Beginners signed up, two divisions were run; Andrew Wels topped the first division, while Coty Loudenburg, all the way from Sparks, Nevada, took care of business in the second division. Justin Enos topped both the 60cc Intermediate and Open classes. While Enos dominated the Open class, Matthew Spencer gave Enos a run for his money in both Intermediate races, as the two consistently ran bar to bar. eN (KTM); 3.
