STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, JAN. 19·20 H onda-mounted Mike Storm and KTM rider Gared Steinke stomped the competition in the 125cc Pro and 60cc Open and 60cc Senior classes at round five of the IO-round CMC Northwest Winter Arenacross Series, held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, as both riders continued their strangleholds on their respective classes. Storm decimated the competition in the 125cc Pro class on both evenings despite brutally tough competition. A pair of former AMA National number holders, Ryan Huffman and Tony Graves, weren't able to stop the SMP teamster Storm, as Storm went four for four on the weekend. On Friday night, Huffman learned just how fast the up-andcoming Storm is, as Storm got out of the chute the fastest and stayed there to top Huffman. Huffman also contested the 250cc Pro class on Friday night, but things weren't going in Huffman's favor in this class either; Graves, who this season has won nearly every event contested in this building, furthered his win streak in the class with his I1 win ahead of the Yamaha-mounted Huffman. On the comeback trail after a lengthy layoff, Huffman finished second via 2-2 placings. "Things just weren't going my way tonight, " said Huffman, who last year campaigned a factory-backed Kawasaki from Kawasaki of Canada. "I haven't been on the new bikes much, and my arms got pumped up." Kawasaki jockey Tyler McClinton has this season taken a back seat to both Steinke and Jared Wood in the 60cc classes, but as both riders were 80 BEG: 1. Aaron McClinton (Yam); 2. "It took me quite a while to get it restarted, and by that time those guys [Kadell and Storm) were long gone." Things went much better for Graves in moto two, but the multitime AMA National number holder still couldn't deny Storm the victory; Storm scored a moto-two win to secure his second overall win of the weekend, ahead of Graves (2-2) and Kadell (3-3). Fick trailed the trio to net the Intermediate-class victory. absent on Friday, McClinton netted an overall win in the 60cc Open class, topping his twin brother Travis. Both of the McClintons netted moto victories, but Tyler won moto two to garner the overall win, ahead of Travis (1-3), Dakota Smith (3-2) and Daniel Nelson (4-4). Steinke's Saturday night appearance, though, spelled bad news for the competition. The diminutive KTM rider went on a rampage in the 60cc Open and 60cc Senior classes, both of which the rider from Salem, Oregon, handily won with I-I placings in each. In the 60cc Open class, Steinke scored his first of two overall wins, ahead of Travis McClinton (2-2) and Tyler McClinton (3-3). Steinke did similar damage in the 60cc Senior (9-11) class, ahead of Tyler McClinton in moto one and Travis McClinton in moto two. Tyler McClinton finished second overall (2-3). Rookie Pro Keith Kadell put his Honda out in front of Tyler Fick and Storm in the first 125cc Pro moto on Saturday, but Kadell's chance at his second Pro-class win of his young career came to an end when the local rider crashed. This placed Storm into a lead he would not relinquish. Graves came from well behind to finish second to Storm in the moto after stalling his Yamaha at the start. Yamaha-mounted Ryan Leach knocked off a large field of 250cc Pro riders in the first of two motos after Leach nabbed the holeshot and then fended off all of Graves' challenges in the moto and place himself in contention for an overall win. However, Graves had other ideas, and he reyersed the order of the finish in moto two to extend his win streak in the class. Honda-mounted Jason Matthews (3-3) finished third overall, ahead of Yamaha rider John Sabo (4-4). The fifth in a series of Husqvarna 50cc Challenge events, held as a half-time Support-class moto, saw the round-four winner, Glenn Prestholt Jr., post a win and inch closer to the top two riders in the series, David Paschke (who did not compete) and Justin Spink. Blake McMackin finished second, ahead of Nash Blaylock, Travis Ralph and Spink, who narrowed the gap on Paschke with his fifth-place finish. eN Forster Livestadl PaviIiOll Salem, Oregon llesults: "'nuary ll-Z0, ZOOl (Round 5 of 101 Friday P/W (4-6); I.
