Alba Yamaha's Anthony Amaradio would finish sixth with FMF-backed Frenchman Stephan Demartis following for seventh. Pingree regrouped to finish eighth, with Colorado Powersports' Andy Harrington taking the final transfer position. Heat two saw another first-turn crash, but Thain avoided the carnage and grabbed the start. Husqvarna's Bryan McGavran got by quickly, though, and was the early leader with Fonseca and Thain on his tail. Fonseca motored by McGavran at the beginning of lap two and took off. Thain also got by McGavran a lap later and would hold on to second to the finish. Ivan Tedesco moved into third in the final laps, while McGavran would hold on for one of his better rides, finishing fourth. Motoworld's Keith Johnson crossed for fifth, with Kawasaki of Mexico's Erick Vallejo finishing sixth. Several laps later, Fonseca was on Smith's rear fender, and the crowd was sensing a good battle. Fonseca pulled up alongside Smith and the two flew side by side over the triple. Fonseca used his extra power to get himself into the next corner first, and the lead was all his. Fonseca slowly pulled away from Smith throughout the next few laps and set sail for yet another Anaheim win. Smith's teammate Thain was in third for the majority of the race, but Schnell was creeping back up on him in the last few laps. Series front-runners Buckelew and Langston had their work cut out for them, and they were both making progress through the pack, but they were nowhere they wanted to be. Schnell made a last-lap pass on Thain for his first podium of the year, following Fonseca and Smith across the line. Thain, Pingree and Ivan Tedesco were next. Buckelew and Langston crossed a distant and disappointing seventh and eighth. "I actually almost crashed out there," Fonseca admitted. "I hit the rev-limiter 8 couple of times, too. Anaheim is good, though. I wish we could race the whole series here." CN Edison International Field AnaIIeim, California Results: FebnNIry 3, 2001 125 HEAT I (6 laps, 1-9 transfer): I.
