In the 500cc B class, Bob Vanotteren
banged out the win over Gary Lee and Steve
Heinzelman i",the day's biggest class.
Ice junkie Dennis Bigelow put the hurt on
the boys in the Vet A class, taking the win
over Upka, who was again stuck in the bridesmaid role. Beyer was locked on his rear wheel,
taking home third on the day as they crossed
the finish line.
It has become the norm for the VTR crew
to promote great events, and this one was no
exception. R.J. and the gang put in the time
and effort to run top-notch ice events.

Connaghan Connects
at Salem AX
By CLAY UOHT
SALEM, OR, JAN. 5·6
Yamaha· mounted Devin Connaghan made his
Professional debut during a CMC-sanctioned
Arenacross doubleheader at the Oregon State
Fairgrounds in Salem. and while the rookie
Pro found out just how tough the competition
in the 250cc Pro class could be, Connaghan
did walk away with a win each night in the
Before The Hill class.
Connaghan had brutally tough competition
both nights in the 250cc Pro class, as seasoned veteran Ryan Leach, perhaps the winningest rider in the history of the Exposition
Arena, hlmdily went four for four in his two
overall wins on the weekend. Connaghan was
Leach's closest competition, trailing Leach in
all four motos to net two consecutive runner·
up finishes in the Pro class. On Saturday
night, Honda rider Jason Matthews rounded
out the top three overall.
However, Connaghan came back strong in
his other c1ess performances. posting a win in
the Before The Hill Intermediate class on Friday ahead of Honda rider James Hamilton
and YZ pilot Aaron Tunnell, the second- and
third-place finishers.
Connaghan'
5
Saturday evening win in the
class came in front of a full-sized field of riders. Keith Kadell handed Connaghan his only
mota loss of the weekend in the class; Kadell
handily topped Connaghan in mota one to
lead Cannaghan, Brody Baxter, Tyler Fick and
Justin Jensen at the finish.
Connaghan had things going his way in
moto two. A win in Connaghan's favor would
net the YZ rider an overall victory, but it
wasn't a piece of cake for the local rider, as
Kadell pressured Can naghan to the finish.
Overall, Connaghan (2-1). KadelJ (1-2), Fick
(4·3), Baxter (3·5) and Jensen filled out the
top five.
KTM rider Pete Sannan scored his first
moto victory of the season in the second
125cc Junior-class moto, but, due to a fourthplace moto-one finish, Sannan was left with
second overall to Yamaha pilot Jack Meadows;
Meadows trailed Sannan and Ryan Huege in
mota two, but, combined with a third· place
first-mota finish, that netted Meadows the
overall win. Huege, though, came back convincingly on Saturday after a bout with a cold
to sweep both motos in the class.
One of the crowd's favorite races this season has been the Husqvama 50cc Challenge
race. Sponsored by Husqvarna dealership
Bill's Motorcycles of Salem, the event has
been dominated by David Paschke in three of
the previous four rounds. Paschke used his
familiarity with the Italian machine to notch
the win and hold a convincing lead in the
series' class points lead. Glenn Prestholt tried
his hand at the Husky, placing second to
Paschke, but ahead of Justin Spink, Ashley
Smith and Blake McMackin.
Washington's Ryan Villopoto was on hand
on Saturday night, and the number-two 80cc
rider in the nation trounced the competition in
the Supermini and 80cc (12·13) classes.
Both of Villopoto's class wins came ahead of
local riders Travis McMackin and Kenneth
Hammontree.
