GNC Texas Regional Mosier Valley USA MX BY K"'T SPANN "'1'10 THE BECKSTER PHOTOS BY K"'T SP...NN EUl£SS,TX,DEC.3 ronman Lance Hollister won all six of his motos to collect wins in the Minibike Stock (12-13), Minibike Modified (12-13) and Minibike Open classes at the GNC Texas Regional the qualifying prelude to the 25th annual GNC Final in March 2001. Team Green/Thousand Oaks/Pro Circuit/Axo-sponsored Justin Smith made an impressive Pro debut, winning all four of his entered 125cc and 250cc Expert motos. The turnout was light, with only 301 entered riders on hand and classes combined throughout the day. Hollister's first win came in Minibike Open competition. The Texan led Colorado's Adam Harvey in both motos to the checkered flag. New Mexico's Austin Turner turned in a 3-4 score for third. Texan Logan Melton (5-3) was fourth. Hollister' second tum came in the combined Minibike Stock event. The 12-13 and 14-16 classes cleared the gate first before the 7-11 riders were cut loose. Chris Rensink, in the 14-16 division, grabbed the holeshot. Hollister went wide in the first turn to skate his way around the berm. Rensink lost ground on the first lap when Hollister took over the lead. Hollister began to distance himself from the pack, passing into the back-of-thepack 7-11 traffic by the end of lap two. Vince Monteleone chased Taylor Painter for two laps before he got by in the whoops, securing second in the 12-13 class. Rensink took the win in the 14-16 group, while Kyle Cunningham won the 7-11. Rensink got the moto-two holeshot, but Hollister passed him by the S turns. Monteleone got in behind Hollister and held second for the remainder, followed by Painter and Michael Kasberg. Zeb Smith won the 7 -11 division, but a fourth-place firstmoto finish held him to second overall; Cunningham's 1-2 tally took first. Brandon Baccus took the win in the 14-16 group, using a 2-1 for the overall win to Rensink's 1-2 for second. Hollister repeated his performance in the Modified Minibike (12-13) motos, with Monteleone again chasing him to the finish line in second. Ryan St. Cyr snared the first 125cc Expert moto holeshot, with Justin Smith at his rear tire. Smith made his move on St. Cyr on the first lap to take control of the race. St. Cyr stayed in second for five laps, chased by Nathan Hale, who had spent the first three laps trying to get around D Bryan Emig. Just short of the white flag, St. Cyr and Hale collided. St. Cyr took a soil sample; Hale kept it on two wheels and assumed second place. Smith claimed the second-moto holeshot and never looked back, finishing six seconds in front of Hale, who was three seconds in front of Emig. With his ice-breaker race under his belt, Smith appeared ready to settle into his new Pro riding career. Du.... tt took the overall for tile day at Mosler Valley USAMX. Jeremy Durrett absconded with the first 125cc Intermediate Modified moto holeshot and kept James Marshall at bay until the final lap, when Marshall swapped out in the jump after the finish line. Aaron Mitchell took over Marshall's vacated spot and finished second, followed by Clayton Miller, Adam Turner and Brandon Fulton. Marshall crossed the checkered flag in sixth. Marshall snagged the second-moto holeshot, with Turner in his wake. Durrett got a less-than-stellar start and had to battle from behind, moving from fifth at the end of the first lap to third by the end of lap two. For two laps, Durrett was all over Turner, but Turner held his ground and refused to be intimidated by the more experienced Intermediate racer. Finally, on the lap before the white flag, Durrett cut under Tumer at the top of the hill coming out of the Badlands to take over second, but he ran out of time, and Marshall went on to win. Durrett still took the overall win by virtue of his 1-2 performance. Marshall (6-1) garnered second. Turner (4-3) was third, while Miller (3-4) was fourth. In the first moto of the combined Mini Mini Stock (6-8) and (9-11) classes, 9-11 racer Kyle Cunningham got the holeshot, with 6-8 racer Zeb Smith at his back tire. Terren O'Dell, racing in the 6-8 portion,' and 9- 11 competitor Aaron Wharton gated third and fourth. Wharton got around O'Dell on the second lap. Preston Primm, in the 9-11 pack, raced in fifth, and they finished in that order. Smith tailed Cunningham once again out of the first turn in moto two, with Primm in third. Cunningham incurred motor gremlins on the first lap and ended up pushing his bike to the finish. Wharton took over the lead, with Smith in second, followed by Primm, 9-11 racer Jake Weaver and 6-8 racers Tyler Cummings and Dillon Van Way. Smith locked on to Wharton and got around him on the final lap to win the moto and his class. Wharton finished second to claim the 9-11 victory.
